Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
A Treachery of Spies is an espionage thriller to rival the very best, a high stakes game of cat-and-mouse, played in the shadows, which will keep you guessing every step of the way.
A body has been found. The elderly victim’s identity has been cleverly obscured but one thing is clear: she has been killed in the manner of traitors to the Resistance in World War Two.
To find answers in the present, police inspector Inès Picaut must look to the past; to 1940s France, a time of sworn allegiances and broken promises, where the men and women of the Resistance fought for survival against Nazi invaders.
But, as Picaut soon discovers, there are those in the present whose futures depend on the past remaining buried, and who will kill to keep their secrets safe. Old fashioned espionage might be a thing of the past but treachery is as dangerous as ever.
Critic reviews
"The most exquisite story of heroism, deception, love and treachery you’ll find this year." (Simon Mayo)
"This is a rich vein for fiction, and Scott does it more than justice, with this beautifully imagined, beautifully written, smart, sophisticated - but fiercely suspenseful - thriller." (Lee Child)
"A fast-moving tightly-wrought thriller. The destination is in fact as unexpected as it’s satisfying - and very thought-provoking." (Robert Goddard)

Passé imparfait
Intricate, evocative story of a modern murder investigation interwoven with a legendary Second World War tale of spies and the Resistance which laid the foundation for it. The narration was so good, I was glad I listened; the storytelling was so good I bought two more copies to give away to friends.

Absolutely fantastic from start to finish
This book, and the performances, make the audible subscription worthwhile.
Too often I am sorely disappointed in the quality of the narration and wonder why audible would dare pay for that low quality work but this book has absolutely redeemed them.
Each of the three narrators is superb and make this an absolute pleasure to listen to. Audible, you must use these narrators as much as you possibly can!
The story itself is wonderful. Gripping from the outset and utterly compelling. A masterpiece. Manda Scott should be exceptionally proud of herself.
If you only purchase one book to listen to this year, or one book to read, make it this one. You will not be disappointed.

Really interesting and thought provoking
Slightly anticlimactic finish, with such a long lead up, but so well-written. I’m glad I listened to it rather than read it, as it truly made the story come to life.

An incredible story, brilliantly constructed.
This is one of the best murder mystery/wartime/spy stories I have ever read. Impeccably researched and gripping from beginning to end.

this is a book which jumped about in terms of time
with more twists and Turns than a nasty roller coaster ride which eventually quickly stops

Outstanding
Manda Scott has written an incredible and insightful tale of two worlds coming together. You will not regret investing the time in getting to grips with this compelling and at times complex story.
