Summary

When Penelope goes to stay with her aunt and uncle in an ancient Derbyshire farmhouse, she is immediately drawn to the wonderful atmosphere and longs to discover all its secrets. Soon she finds herself slipping back in time to the sixteenth century, where she is welcomed by the Babbington family, whose home it was then.

As the lines between past and present blur, Penelope becomes caught up in the tragic events that befall her new friends as they make plans to rescue the doomed monarch, Mary, Queen of Scots.

Evocative and beautiful

The only slight negative is that this is an abridged version of the book. The narrator is exquisite and deals with all the voices perfectly from1930s London to 16 century Derbyshire dialect. It has sublime descriptions of the English countryside and a beautiful plot. Highly recommended!!

Amazing

It lead me on telling a story of how a girl could see shadows and figures. It was delightful

My favourite childhood book

Beautifully read but sadly not complete, slightly adapted. Still a great listen or read. A lovely tale beautifully written.

Wonderful

I am an adult and thoroughly enjoyed this. If you did to and love Tudor history, read le temps viendra - the time will come- Anne Boleyn.

Wonderful narration, such a shame its abridged

Wonderful narration, but very abridged version. Such a shame, over halfof this charming story is missing. Even full version would only have been no more than six hours, so not sure why it needed to be so reduced.
