Summary

A sweeping fantasy romance set against the backdrop of an Ottoman Empire-inspired world, A Taste of Gold and Iron by Alexandra Rowland is perfect for fans of A Marvellous Light and The Goblin Emperor.

One false coin could topple an empire.

Kadou, the shy prince of Arasht, has no intention of wrestling for imperial control with his sister, the queen. Yet he remains at odds with one of the most powerful ambassadors at court—the father of the queen’s new child. Then a hunting party goes terribly awry, and Kadou finds himself under suspicion of attempted murder.

To prove his loyalty to his sister and salvage his reputation, Kadou takes responsibility for the investigation of a break-in at one of their guilds. He enlists the help of his newly appointed bodyguard, the coldly handsome Evemer, who seems to tolerate him at best. But what appears to be a straightforward crime spirals into a complex counterfeiting operation, with a powerful enemy at its heart.

In Arasht, where princes can touch-taste precious metals with their fingers and myth runs side by side with history, counterfeiting is heresy. The conspiracy they discover could cripple the kingdom’s financial standing—and bring about its ruin.

Goblin Emperor Vibes, with a dash of Captive Prince

This baby can fit so many tropes! Alllll the tropes!

There is a plot, and there is worldbuilding, but tbh if you are not mostly here for the underappreciated Hot Prince/tsundere virgin bodyguard slooooowburn sexy pining shenanigans, you may find yourself a trifle frustrated. Otoh if you are here for that, then boy howdy, you are in for a good time.

(I’ve said it’s reminiscent of The Goblin Emperor, but tbh it’s perhaps closer to Megan Derr’s storytelling? The views of court life are interesting, but, like the fake gold coins that ostensibly move the plot along, they don’t quite ring true: this is the kind of aristocracy familiar from American fantasy novels where everyone acts and thinks pretty much like middle class Americans, rather than a court that’s genuinely steeped in a keen awareness of class and privilege, like the one that Katherine Addison presents us with in The Goblin Emperor. )

Good story, terrible ending

Once I got into it I enjoyed the story and great performance of the narrator but the ending was far to blunt. as I had invested my time in the characters I think an epilogue would be worth adding

Loved it from start to finish

I hope I can visit this place again one day. I loved it from the very start. It is a place full of diversity and intrigue, and I miss the characters already. The story is whole and complete and finishes on a beautiful note. I can not verbalise how much I enjoyed it and I whole heartedly recommend it.

Pageturner

I was captivated and only when I put it down, my mind started working and I noticed several flaws. But while listening, I could not care less.
The narration was performed good but with a lack of voices. It did not lessen my enjoyment.

Only two things bothered me. First, the story started with a main character suffering from an anxiety disorder. It was marvelous, but was dropped suddenly at 25%. Second, the audiotrack was very often corrected with a newly recorded sentence, but I could hear it was a different track.
