Summary

When Christie blows in like a warm wind to take over their department, five very different women find themselves thrown together at work… Anna, 39, is left reeling after her fiancé’s departure with a younger woman. Then there’s Grace, trapped in a loveless marriage. Can she prevent 33-year-old Dawn from making the same mistake? At 28, Raychel would seem to be the happiest, with a loving husband and their cosy nest for two. But what dark secrets make Raychel so unwilling to open up?

Under Christie’s kindly hand, the girls know they have some difficult choices to make. Indeed, none of them quite realised how much they needed the sense of laughter and loyalty that abounds when five women become friends.

Terrible book!

This was truly dire. Full of cliches, the characters were both unbelievable and unlikable. The story was clunky, the situations ridiculous and the 'in jokes' of nicknames was embarrassing. It annoyed and irritated me. The narrator was good, and deserved a medal for reading this trash.

Milly Johnson at her best.

Yet another masterpiece by Milly Johnson.
When female friends come together to fight for each other and put their lives back together with the help from a remarkable female Boss.
Full of humour , disappear, justice and joy.
Loveable , hateful , shallow controlling and timid Characters that are interwoven in sorting their unhappy lives.
Loved it.

Good characters, but somewhat formulaic!

What did you like best about A Summer Fling? What did you like least?

I liked some of the characters enough to want to finish it (I tend not to go on with books I'm not enjoying). However, having read/listened to White Wedding by the same author, I really disliked her once more churning out an, at best foolish, female character who got to the alter, and even married, having known for months that she did not love the horrible individual that was the groom! I actually really enjoyed White Wedding, despite having to seriously suspend disbelief. However, between the two books (it turns out this one was published before WW), the idiot bride was done to death and beyond. In addition, this author clearly has a thing about using an overweight character as a means to illustrate the negative (yes really)! This tendancy was relentlessly repeated through the three books of hers that I have read/listened too. I forgave it in the Teashop on the Corner because it was such a good book. I tolerated it in White Wedding, despite it being destracting, because I really liked the characters and enjoyed the book. However, three books using this scapegoating that could not be aimed at any other group, combined with more idiot bride and I'm done!

Would you recommend A Summer Fling to your friends? Why or why not?

No, for the reasons sited above.

Did A Summer Fling inspire you to do anything?

No

Any additional comments?

This author can write great characters and interesting storylines. Unfortunately, in my view her style is lazy, as she regurgitates themes, cheap shots and even favourite words. What a shame.

A Summer Fling

Excellent book. Had me hooked from the first minute until the very last. I could relate to all the characters and it had me crying at some points and then laughing out loud (on a crowded train) at others.

What a wonderful audiobook

This is the first time I have listened to anything by Milly Johnson, but it won't be the last! This book made me laugh out loud as well as making me shed a little tear. It is a lovely gentle story about the lives of women who work together - and I always love a story that has a happy ending! It is wonderfully written and I didn't want to stop listening from the start right to the end - however sleep and work got in the way!

I loved this book. This is my third Milly Johnson and I have enjoyed them all. If you like Marian Keyes you should like these.

Good but......

I enjoyed this book and followed the stories of the characters to the end. I have read other stories by Milly Johnson and enjoyed them more. This one one was a bit more contrived than usual and touched on some darker themes (domestic violence, control etc), so be warned. Still enjoyable but not sure I'd listen to this one again.

Loved this

I started listening to this book in the car like I normally do. Found I couldn't wait to hear the next part so played it on my phone when I took myself off to my caravan for a few days on my own. Finished it within two days! Really miss hearing about the characters lives and antics. There were some phrases which made me laugh out loud! A real good listen. Love Molly Johnson x

Good Overall

I really enjoyed this book overall. I loved feeling like I was getting to know the characters. To be honest, I would have liked the women themselves to be a little more flawed and for the ending to be more realistic. I liked the writing enough that I'm buying an earlier book by this author, so I think that's a good endorsement.

Uplifting story of five women

Although the ending was a bit storybook romance, this is a great light read if you are looking for an encouraging novel about love. I also enjoyed the positive and healthy relationships the women had at work . . . a feel-good novel overall.

Great book about friends and relationships

This book was really fun! Five women work together and really don't know each other. They end up becoming very close. They help one another through some difficult and happy times. The book is funny and has a good story line with some serious parts. Dawn is making plans to get married, Grace is unhappily married, Anna is unhappily single because her boyfriend left her, Raychel is happily married and Christie is their new, wonderful boss.

I had not paid attention to how long I had been listening, and when I thought the author was going to wrap it up, the book pleasantly continues. I was happy with the ending of each woman's story line. Whether or not everything is realistic really does not matter. This is a good book.

Not up to standard

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Less time spent on the dark side.

What was most disappointing about Milly Johnson’s story?

Too much dreary plodding through the down side.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Milly Johnson is a great writer and her work always flows nicely. There are some nice bits in here, it just spends way too much time plodding through the miserable dark sides of its main characters lives. Johnson is a pleasure to read in general because her stories set up a character or characters in a life that isn't what they could achieve, examines why they are settling for less than they are, and then takes us through the transformation process to achieve a better life. This is the pattern with all the Milly Johnson books I have read, and I enjoy very much her examination of what causes women to get into less-than situations and what sort of processes and transformations they go through in order to live to their full potential. In this book, unlike "A Spring Affair" (one of my favorites and the one that caused me to get more Milly Johnson in my library), the character development in pretty shallow, the motivations are over simplified, minimal time is spent on internal transformation and growth, and worst of all the dreary story of Dawn and her miserable fiancé (and his wretched family) just goes on and on and on and on. It's depressing to read about and there's not much to be learned from it, it just drags on interminably. If you want a good chic lit empowerment story try "A Spring Affair" by the same author, it's much better-at least two thirds of the book are about the joy of growing and becoming yourself, and only the first third is an exploration of what happens when you don't stand up for yourself.

Funny & Witty Read!

Would you listen to A Summer Fling again? Why?

I normally only listen to books once so no.

What did you like best about this story?

That they were all in it together and they stood by each other.

Any additional comments?

My only comment would be to have heard in detail more about the other 3 births, not just the details of the babies afterward. The first one was so funny it was a bit of a let down not to be able to experience it with the others.

Feel good book which i really enjoyed

I very much enjoyed this story. There were a lot of characters to remember - so it took a few chapters for it all to gel but once I got into the flow, it was excellent. The different stories of all 5 women were so interesting and kept me enthralled. Milly Johnson so knows how to write a good book!
