Summary

New York Times bestselling author Robert Dugoni’s thrilling series continues as Seattle homicide detective Tracy Crosswhite is plunged into a case of family secrets and murder…

Called in to consult after a young woman disappears, Tracy Crosswhite has the uneasy feeling that this is no ordinary missing-persons case. When the body turns up in an abandoned well, Tracy’s suspicions are confirmed. Estranged from her family, the victim had balked at an arranged marriage and had planned to attend graduate school. But someone cut her dreams short.

Solving the mystery behind the murder isn’t Tracy’s only challenge. The detective is keeping a secret of her own: she’s pregnant. And now her biggest fear seems to be coming true when a new detective arrives to replace her. Meanwhile, Tracy’s colleague Vic Fazzio is about to take a fall after his investigation into the murder of a local community activist turns violent and leaves an invaluable witness dead.

Two careers are on the line. And when more deadly secrets emerge, jobs might not be the only things at risk.

Good read

I enjoy Robert Dugoni's books but he uses the word said far too much. Unfortunately I knew who did the murder almost immediately in this story but it was a good read.

Another excellent book

I do feel that the main characters are my friends, and I enjoy their different characteristics and their fears and joys.

The story line was well handled and very interesting, I also like the fact that there are often two stories running simultaneously in Mr Dugoni's books. Another well satisfied reader here!

Excellent character driven mystery!

A Steep Price is book #6 in the Tracy Crosswhite series. As with all of Dugoni's other books this can be read/listened to as a stand alone book. I would suggest listening to these books in the order they were written. There story is progressive and so are the relationships.
There are a few storylines going on in this book. There's a missing Indian (not Native American) woman missing. She was going to medical school in defiance of her parents arranging a marriage for her.
Then there is also a pregnant Tracy who is stressed about her job security when a Latino woman, Andrea Gonzalez is hired into her division.
Meanwhile Vic Fazzio and Del Castigliano are working on a different case. An outspoken mother who is tired of the neighborhood crime and drugs is found murdered. When Fazzio gets sent out with Gonzalez there's a fatal shooting of a witness and it seems something funny is going on with the witness accounts of what happened. They don't match what actually happened and the blame is being on Fazzio.
This is such a good book and a great addition to the series.
My HIGHLEST RECOMMENDATIONS!
Emily Sutton-Smith is one of the best female narrators in my opinion. She did a fantastic job as I would expect.

Dugoni is a master of the modern detective genre!

Robert Dugoni is also a master of the legal thriller genre with his David Sloane series, but A STEEP PRICE is Book 6 in his Seattle detective Tracy Crosswhite series. Dugoni's Tracy Crosswhite series, Karin Slaughter's Will Trent series, Louis Penny's Chief Inspector Gamache series, and Robert Bryndza's Erika Foster series are my four currently favorite detective series. As usual for Dugoni the publisher's summary sets up A STEEP PRICE very well. The novel features two unrelated cases,Tracy's murder case and her partner Vic Fazio's drug case. Tracy and her husband Dan are dealing with her pregnancy in its 16th week and Fazio is dealing with his wife's breast cancer. A truism about all of Robert Dugoni's novels is that family plays a major role.

Robert Dugoni usually releases novels at a rate of one every eight or nine months. During the last five weeks he has released both THE EXTRAORDINARY LIFE OF SAM HELL and A STEEP PRICE. THE EXTRAORDINARY LIFE OF SAM HELL is in my opinion a certain prize winner and may be one of the best novels of 2018.

A bit slow

I thought it was a little slow moving. Not enough action or suspense. It didn’t hold my attention so I found myself drifting and having to go back and listen to parts that had already been read.
Narration was very good

Good. Not great

I really like this series and was happy that all the characters were back. I liked the story lines but I guess I was expecting them to connect or overlap.
Good listen but not my favorite in this series.

Love this series but...

I waited for this one since it was announced! But I have to say it doesn’t have the suspense that the others have. You’d have to be a seasoned reader and love this series to understand the relationship dynamics and why these events are important. I’m looking forward to the next one, and hoping that the events in this book set up for a great read as always.

Tracy Crosswhite & the gang do it again.

Emily Sutton-Smith does some serious accents very well in this story. I like the story line and the shoot off of learning more about Faz & his life. Great quick listen.

Accents are horrible....story just ok.

Accents are horrible...REALLY bad.
Story is just ok, and very predictable... my least favorite of this series.
I did enjoy delving into Faz's life though.

Good read

I enjoy these books and characters. The narrator is consistent through the series and is fine in general —unless there are accents involved. I ended up Fast forwarding through some bc it was too painful to listen to.
