Summary

This is an audiobook about fear. Fear of a virus. Fear of death. Fear of losing our jobs, our democracy, our human connections, our health, and our minds. It's also about how the government weaponised our fear against us - supposedly in our best interests - until we were one of the most frightened countries in the world.

But why did the government deliberately frighten us. How has this affected us as individuals and as a country? Who is involved in the decision-making that affects our lives? How are behavioural science and nudge theory being used to subliminally manipulate us? How does the media leverage fear? What are the real risks to our well-being?

Ahead of any official inquiry into the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, Laura Dodsworth explores all these questions and more, in a nuanced and thought-provoking discussion of an extraordinary year in British life and politics. With stories from members of the general public who were impacted by fear, anxiety, and isolation, and revealing interviews with psychologists, politicians, scientists, lawyers, Whitehall advisers and journalists, A State of Fear calls for a more hopeful, transparent and effective democracy.

An Important Book

This book outlines everything that should be discussed at the incoming UK enquiry into Covid but never will be.

A must read for all sceptic minds

This book has certainly opened my eyes to the lengths of coercive tactics governments undertake to get what they want, even supposedly, democratically elected ones.

Having grown up in Iraq, during the Saddam rule, I have always been sceptical about government motives, last year in particular, I became overly sceptical and synical about the way Western governments have handled this Pandemic, and the gradual erosion of our basic liberties.

What shocked me the most, was how compliant and passive the general public have been about all this, when it was obvious, early on, that this Pandemic has been blown out of all reasonable proportions.

If anything should be mandatory, it’s this book

Brilliant by Laura Dodsworth, A state of fear is possible one of the most important books of our time. Clear, concise, fact based and very easy to listen to. Loved it from start to finish and very reassuring to realise that my suspicions that things weren’t quite right have been totally vilified. Many thanks for writing this Laura.

Superb

Essential reading for our times. Clear, rational and beautifully read. An antedote to more than just the current events.

A concise overview

I first heard of Laura Dodsworth following her interview with James Delingpole and immediately had to listen to her book. It is well presented and the book flows from one chapter to another. I'm sure this will be one of many books describing the coercion and corruption of governments regarding this so called pandemic. It also doesn't make claims to know who the real baddies are, only to judge those actors in the public domain by their actions. I shall now buy the paper copy of this book to thoroughly look into the figures and hand around.

A must listen

The covid 19 saga reminded me of the push for war with Iraq and Afghanistan, the narrative was carefully curated and the reasons to be scared were never ending. This book cuts to the heart of the last year, the fear, propaganda and the techniques used. Great job Laura

why psychological warfare teams 🤔

Thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook bit of a mind opener of why military psychological teams and government psychological teams were involved with Covid-19

A Covid must read/listen

This book can open your eyes and ears like none other. Laura is so credible that it hardly comes as a surprise that Lord Jonathon Sumption, once of the Supreme Court in the UK, has recently acknowledged and mentioned it when talking about the UK’s lockdown woes. I have a written copy on the way but, simply couldn't wait so I've listened to it as well now. Laura reads superbly but I have quickened the read time to 1.2 to get through this exciting book faster.

Highly recommend

A comprehensive guide to what happened in Britain during the so called Covid Pandemic and the governments highly effective strategy to scare the public into giving up all their liberties. Very well written. Happy to report I was never “nudged” the entire time.

Essential reading

A real page-turner. if everyone were to read this book, we'd be much less likely to repeat 2020.
