About this listen

A little sweet tea and a whole lot of spells won't always put out the fire....

Flea Market Magic: Book One

Ruby Mae Jewell helps run the family business of selling antiques and refurbished goods. But when more research reveals a magical object's threatening nature to the magical community as well, she's put to the test of what to do...especially when they find someone murdered on their land who was looking for it.

Rags to Witches: Book Two

When one of Ruby Mae Jewell's friends gets stabbed at his own wedding reception, her abilities to solve the mystery go completely cold. There are a lot more questions than answers, and with more than the groom's life in the balance, Rue might need a lot of help to stitch things back together.

Pickups and Pirates: Book Three

After a hurricane attacks the Crystal Coast, Ruby Mae Jewell will have to deal with more than just the wreckage of harsh weather. When history of the notorious pirate Captain "Bonny" Ann Bonnet catches up, murder and mystery soon follow. Rue discovers that the storm and the discovery of her ship right off the shores of her home area are no coincidence, and she must race to claim the cursed treasure before anyone else gets hurt.

Very dull narration, but wonderful for sending me off to sleep, their voice sinks at the end of every sentence, which might just be a quirk of the southern drawl accent, but overall the effect is soporific. The family dynamics around the story is sweet and the mystery component sufficiently interesting to keep me interested, with an unusual take on the usual magic-family trope.

Quirky southern magic

I downloaded the box set as the description sounded like my type of thing but I just could not get into them. I would zone out and miss chunks of a chapter and have to go back. The stories were ok but again I just didn't get behind the characters. There are so many little bits that have great potential but soon get lost. ( The boyfriend, the crazy chicken, the ghost grandma that cooks, the house that changes). Not for me in the end.

I really tried to like the books...

This isn't my usual type of book but I am glad that I found it. The narrator really brings this alive and does a great job of all the characters. It is a good mixture of fantasy with a slightly older audience. Maybe it is aimed at older teens and adults but it certainly is entertaining.

A good find

Occasionally the ascent slipped or grated. But otherwise, the story was gripping and well told

Tell the writer that a person who's still alive cannot be (repeatedly) called "the body. Because it's, you know, alive. So it's a person. Not a body. This series started okayish, but got worse quickly.

I feel compelled to...
