This is the last of Le Carre's novels from the 1960s. It paints the diplomatic and espionage worlds as murky, seedy, dishonest, duplicitous. There is no glamour, only disappointment and betrayal.

It is oddly prescient, especially as I write this review on the day when black-clad and balaclaved, far-right thugs disrupted the port of Dover with their anti-immigrant message. A small town in Germany, and another small town in England. The UK and Europe are prey to extremism, nationalism, division, and hatred.

Fantastic story, the tension slowly building as the story unfolds. Great characters that also grow as the story develops. One of my favourite from le Carrie
