Summary

Random House presents the audiobook edition of A Shilling for a Wife by Emma Hornby, read by Penelope Freeman.

Sally Swann thought life couldn't get much worse. Then a single coin changed hands.

A dismal cottage in the heart of Bolton, Lancashire, has been Sally's prison since Joseph Goden 'bought' her from the workhouse as his wife. A drunkard and bully, Joseph rules her with a rod of iron, using fists and threats to keep her in check.

When Sally gives birth, however, she knows she must do anything to save her child from her husband's clutches. She manages to escape and, taking her baby, flees for the belching chimneys of Manchester, in search of her only relative.

But with the threat of discovery by Joseph, who will stop at nothing to find her, Sally must fight with every ounce of strength she has to protect herself and her son and finally be with the man who truly loves her. For a fresh start does not come without a price....

A Shilling for a Wife is powerful, absorbing storytelling that is perfect for fans of sagas by Dilly Court, Rosie Goodwin and Maggie Hope.

Loved it!

I was a bit doubtful as to whether I would like this, given the violence that is part of the story, but it was a truly great listen. I also got involved with the characters and unlike some stories, I never lost track of one of them. It’s a book you just cannot stop listening to. Excellently narrated by Penelope Freeman and perfectly written by Emma Hornby, thank you I can’t wait to find another!

One of the best . out of so many similar titles

I've listened to soooooooo many of these types of books and this one is really good. it's a well thought out story with depth&mystery. it's moving and not boring or loved up like so many can be . it's a beautifully written peice of work that I would recommend. the title is harsh but the story is so well put together and I would say well done to both the author and narrator

Stunning northern drama

Loved this book immensely the settings and realism of the time were faithfully portrayed. The drama was gritty and compelling however its narration let it down considerably. As it is a northern drama with northern language it would perhaps have been better to use a northern reader. I became very annoyed at the constant mispronouncing of Bolton districts.
However the book overall was well written and highly descriptive. Looking forward to more from this author.
