I've followed all the books in this series featuring the thoughtful and aloof detective Simon Serrailler and am glad to say that his latest book is excellent. A satisfyingly complex detective story enhanced by the well-rounded characters whose lives thread through all the books. I think one gets more from the series if read in chronological order for, although their back-stories are eluded to in this book, one gets a greater sense of the evolving lives of the characters who populate all the books. The reader is first class

I started reading this one - after devouring Susan Hill in a binge some 10 years ago - but somehow this one didn't grab me - so many threads and storylines and all a bit dour. I originally had the kindle edition, and there was an option for the audiobook - but I didn't take it at the time - I was looking down at audiobooks back then - why would I want someone to read me a book? So, the world moves on - I'm at the gym with AirPods and a new love for drowning out the tribal beats and a realisation that this is a great time to catch up on that "reading". So I took up the option on A Question of Identify - started back from the beginning - and gosh what a well-crafted book it is. I really enjoyed it - only giving it 4 stars for the story as it took 10 years for me to pick it up again! (My fault? Or maybe we've both matured?).

As always, Steven pacey is just the perfect narrator. His voice ranges are quite extraordinary. The story was interesting and easy to follow. Following the family and their connections throughout these Simon Serrailier books, is addictive!

I enjoyed this classic Serailler but now annoyed that I missed a book in the series. I wish they would appear in order! My advice is to check the book order elsewhere. Lots of slight question marks as always but a relaxing listen and very well read.

Good story and good listen. Simon is obviously an excellent police officer but is rather a spoilt brat. I am looking forward to listening to some more of these murder stories.
