Summary

William Shirburn really isn't into Christmas - all that jingly, tinselly, presenty stuff makes him feel queasy. He'd prefer to spend it alone watching trash with his cat. But there's an unwritten law that elderly people are not allowed to be left alone at Christmas, especially if they live in a vast old mansion that could be a gold-mine in the right hands - and William's relative are very keen to ensure that Haseley House does end up in the right hands!

Meanwhile, Hilary Watlington, William's niece-in-law, intends to ignore Christmas altogether. With her son Daniel away, she won't have to conceal how desperately she still misses Ben. But widows aren't allowed to spend Christmas alone either, and it sounds as if William might need her support.

Critic reviews

"Plenty of laughs and life changing events...a terrific read." (The Nottingham Evening Post)
"A family Christmas none will forget in a hurry. Wickedly funny, this Christmas house party is both a delight and a horrible warning." (Katie Fforde)

A Festive Fiasco!

Where does A Proper Family Christmas rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is quite high up in my list of favourites and is certainly one I will listen to each Christmas. It will make me thankful for my family :-)

Who was your favorite character and why?

The long-suffering and very sweet widow Hilary, plunged in the midst of her late husband's relatives for a Christmas house party. We meet her as her son is off on a holiday of his own, leaving her alone for the first time since her husband's death; her extended family discover this and insist that she goes to William's historic and rambling huge house with them.

Many of them have cunning plans of their own to persuade the elderly William to leave his house to them in his will, but Hilary is determined that William should make up his own mind and finds an unexpected ally in the young Nanny, Frances, as well as a very nice love interest of her very own.....

What about Sara Coward’s performance did you like?

She captures the wit of the story and the curmudgeon-ness of William quite perfectly.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

With family like this, who needs enemies?

Any additional comments?

A delight. Well worth the money :-)

Predictable

Stereotypical characters. I could have written a plot outline once characters were in place. Didn't like the characters enough to care about the outcome. At least i was multi tasking whilst listening so time wasn't wasted.

Great.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. I will definitely listen to it again. It will probably become a Christmas tradition.
