It is always nice to have a new Bruno mystery and this one doesn’t disappoint.

Just wonderful to be back in your world. If the Dordogne is half as good as you portray, it must be a jewel.

The life and characters are beguiling

The writing is more lyrical than the other novels in the series, as is the narration. Our hero Bruno has developed in character and he is less a man of action in this novel. He is now more reflective and the pace of this novel is more gentle and the characters more rounded.

The set piece of the big feast with his family of friends was surprising. It did not really move the plot along but I enjoyed it very much.I was immersed in Bruno's world and became beguiled by it but I missed Martin Walker's action writing.

My criticism might be that cooking has overtaken the murder plot to increase the word count . it is difficult to define the genre of this novel as the series has taken a different direction.I look forward to the next novel and I am not sure where the series is heading.

Martin Walker is excellent at writing action scenes as is the narrator at interpreting them but we don't experience those skills in this novel

I was so looking forward to this book but I feel it is the weakest among the trilogy. Still worth a listen though

I’m beginning to wonder whether the author actually likes women despite their regular claims to but instead of confident, independent and caring, many of the female characters appear to be hard, selfish and unreasonable.
The story was ok and the narration of the usual standard.
It would be really good to see more genuine warmth from some of the harsher characters
