Summary

Being a hero isn't a walk on Mars!

Alexander S. Ryker dreams of becoming a hero, but dreams are hard to achieve when you’ve caused several million credits worth of property damage. Being expelled from the Mars Police Academy isn’t helping his case. Crushed, Alex encounters a girl named Gabrielle Angelise in a meeting that will change his life forever.

Gabrielle is an alien! She’s also on the run. Alex wonders if this is the chance that he’s been waiting for, the chance to finally become a hero. Opportunities like this don’t come often, or ever, and so Alex steps up to protect Gabrielle and make his dream a reality. He will become a hero - if the strain from living with an alien bombshell doesn’t kill him first!

Fans of To Love-Ru who wanted a better protagonist will enjoy this series.

nice

The narrator was especially great, the story reminded me of an anime i watched a long time ago but this was more developed

Enjoyed it, but it's too similar to To-Love Ru

Overall I enjoyed the story and will probably listen to the next volume. It's written by a weeb who writes for weebs, and since I'm a weeb I can't help but like it. The performance by the narrator is also excellent. I would have liked for a Male narrator to do the male characters' dialogue lines, but Amber Lee Connors does a good enough job of them and I have no criticism of her performance of any female character.

That said, the story does have some problems that, if the future volumes don't nail out then I won't be able to recommend the series
As the title says, I find the story to be too similar to the work that inspired it. The character Gabriella doesn't have any notable differences from TLR's Lala: she has the same kind of names for her silly inventions, she has the same childish naivety and ignorance to human sexuality and how she's an extremely hot girl making the Male lead's teen hormones go haywire, her appearance on the front cover is also reminiscent of Lala! I struggle to think of ANYTHING that the author has done to differentiate this main character from the character that inspired her! Her backstory and her main want and need is the same as Lala's! I don't know if an accusation of plagiarism is 100% fair but it's terribly unoriginal.
There are many other characters that are similar to characters in TLR, the body guard sent to bring Gabriella home is really similar to TLR's Zastin, the girl with a weird laugh reminds me of a character in TLR who starts out hating Lala (the TLR character doesn't have a crush on the MC at the beginning, so credit where credit is due.)

A saving grace in regards to originality is the protagonist Alex. Unlike the MC from TLR, Alex has an established want and goal for us to get behind from the get go, he wants be a hero and wants to pursue work that regularly requires him to help people in danger. At the start of the story he gets kicked out of the city's police force because he's reckless and doesn't obey orders so he needs to find a new way to become a hero. He's not the best protagonist, but there's more to say about him than TLR's Yuuki Rito who's just an "everyman" with nothing notable about his character and just a "normal" guy getting in crazy situations.

That said, just because the protagonist has more going for him as a character I can't really recommend this over TLR, especially since I feel like the humour of both stories work better in visual mediums and TLR is a manga and anime.

I don't regret getting and listening to this book, but I can't really recommend it due to it's faults. If you are a fan of TLR and you are interested in this series maybe start from book 2? I haven't listened to it yet, but I can't think of anything in this story that didn't happen in TLR (minus the prologue) and, chances are, anything you may need filling in on may be in book 2 anyway.
