No argument: James Lee Burke is among the finest of all contemporary American novelists' DAILY MAIL

A routine assignment transporting two death-row prisoners to their executions goes fatally wrong, leaving Dave Robicheaux brutally wounded and his partner dead.

Obsessed with revenge, Dave is persuaded by the DEA to go undercover into the torrid sleepy depths of New Orleans, a volatile world of Mafia drug-running and Cajun voodoo magic. He becomes irrevocably snarled in the nightmarish web surrounding Mafia don Tony Cardo and must put himself against his own worst fears in order to survive.

Praise for one of the great American crime writers, James Lee Burke:

'James Lee Burke is the heavyweight champ, a great American novelist whose work, taken individually or as a whole, is unsurpassed.' Michael Connelly

'A gorgeous prose stylist.' Stephen King

'Richly deserves to be described now as one of the finest crime writers America has ever produced.' Daily Mail

I’d not come across this author before, so I took a chance on this book. It’s beautifully written, rich characters and a great story. The narration was excellent, which really brought the book to life. I’m eager to read more of Burkes novels.

Beautifully written

This is, I think, my fourth JLB story - Lee is in my opinion an excellent story teller, and Dave Robichauex is a well developed character. Mark Hammer has a great voice and range of accents for this genre. I look forward to listening to more of this series.

Highly enjoyable listen

I love the character, I love the writing but I found the premise of the story hard to believe. Still, it was very enjoyable and Tony C is a great character.

A lovely writer, but…

My 3rd outing with Dave and it did not disappoint. The prose and the pace of these stories are sublime and whereas Will Patton is king of narration, Mark Hammer runs him a close second.
I will be following these books through, love them
