"Your daughter is dead." When Kat Cavanaugh hears the words every mother dreads, her perfect world shatters. She takes in the beautiful long blonde hair, torn yellow dress, and chipped blue nail-varnish. It can’t be real. And then the police add the word "suicide". But Kat refuses to believe them. Story
I haven’t lived here long. The house is small and a little run-down, but each piece of faded floral wallpaper I peel away feels like unwrapping the second chance I never thought I’d get. I’m finally free to wear what I want, and I don’t flinch when I accidently burn dinner. My new home is warm, and the kids are safe inside. Anywhere would feel idyllic after the nightmare marriage I’ve just escaped.

But Kim’s murderer was caught and sent to prison - did they arrest the wrong man?

Women are rarely cold-blooded killers. But when famous philanthropist Hugo Fletcher is found dead, there is no doubt in anybody's mind that the killer is a woman. And it is clear from the precision of the planning that this was no crime of passion. It was an execution. The victim was revered the world over for his charitable work with trafficked Eastern European prostitutes, and as at least one of these girls is missing, Detective Chief Inspector Tom Douglas is certain that there has to be a connection.

Perfection
John Nicholl is one of the very few authors that I both read and listen to, not in whispersync, but at entirely different times. His work is so well constructed, so carefully thought out that it warrants two bites of the cherry. Jake Urry's narration style is such that if he read out the phone book you'd be both fascinated and terrified. The 'mash-up' of Mr Nicholl's words and Mr Urry's narration results in complete perfection. Audio books don't come better than this. If A Mind to Kill was a lager, I'd go as far as to say it would probably be the best lager in the world. The sub text of A Mind to Kill is totally mind blowing; we have law but do we have justice? Would anyone say that Rebecca was totally in her right mind when she committed the murders? Does it not seem, by her behaviour and her speech, that she is deeply disturbed as a result of Sheridan's abuse? The book is a very telling indictment of the way in which children, who are brave enough to name their abusers, get treated by the courts and defence barristers. Mr Nicholl cleverly stops the book from being too bleak with the addition of DI Gareth Gravel, or Grav, as he prefers to be known. Grav's misogyny and total disregard for authority provide some welcome humour, making the balance of tone absolutely perfect. Anyone who cares what happens to the victims of child abuse should read this book. I feel proud and privileged to recommend this outstanding audio book to everyone.

A pleasurable experience
I cannot find fault with this. As dark, bloody and satisfying as every other book. It just ticks every box for me. The torture scenes are gruesome. I couldnt help but laugh at her endless dilema of what to do with the bodies. I was SO thrilled with this book that I dont know what on earth to listen to next. Not for the faint hearted. But what a fabulous heroine. Also, does Jake Urry do personal narrations? He could narrate my shopping list and Id be spellbound. What a great, dark combo of voice and story. Thank you both.

brilliant, disturbing and terrifying!
What other book might you compare A Mind to Kill to, and why?
the other John Nicholl book I've read, White is the coldest colour
Any additional comments?
This is the second John Nicholl book I’ve read and, if anything, I found it even more gripping than the first.
The story centres around a young woman, Rebecca who, after her childhood abuser evaded justice sets out to revenge herself on any man who preys on children.
As the above suggests, this book tackles some difficult subjects and at times, I found it hard to listen to, although it has to be said the author handles his subject matter with sensitivity and, having read his previous book I knew what to expect.
I absolutely loved this book, the characterisation is strong—I particularly enjoyed the character of ‘Grav’ the old-school police officer who brings some light relief to the story. You find yourself feeling so sorry and angry for Rebecca, the abuse she suffered as a child and the lack of justice so clearly shaped her later actions and the author draws her character so vividly you feel like you are in the room with her and her ‘victims’.
Jake Urry’s narration was utterly mesmerising, and lifted this book which was already a great one on to a whole new level. It’s the first of his readings I’ve listened to but won’t be the last!

Another great read form John Nicoll
This was a fascinating storyline. The killer was a little mad to begin with, but it was fascinating watching her become more unhinged as the story went along. All of the characters developed well. My favourite was the Detective Sargent who took time to just listen and empathise with ordinary people in the street and this was how she got the first breakthrough of the case. The grumpy Detective Inspector was a big teddy bear when it mattered and a good working relationship could develop between them. The Narrator was, as . usual, excellent with his mesmerising voice and range of accents. There were some gory scenes, so beware if you like cozy! This isn't cozy, it's dark, but so enjoyable! Another cracker Mr Nicoll.

Another Gripping Thriller from John Nicholl
Every time I hear that this author is releasing another book I am delighted, particularly when I know it is going to be narrated by Jake Urry. This latest book certainly does not disappoint. It is a gripping listen; so much so that you won't be able to stop until the end. Although the story is dark and gruesome at times with lots of detail it was a very gripping read. Jake Urry brought the characters to life with his usual expertise. Another superb offering from John Nicholl.

"Will you walk into my parlour?"
“Will you walk into my parlour?” said the Spider to the Fly,
'Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy;
The way into my parlour is up a winding stair,
And I've a many curious things to show when you are there.”
This poem - also quoted in the book - brilliantly sums up A mind to Kill. It's a fast paced, gruesome, disturbing and thought provoking novel about revenge and regret. If you liked John Nicholl's previous books, you won't be disappointed!
The narration by Jake Urry is once again spot on. It's definitely an audiobook worth listening to!

A high tension winner packed with suspense.
What made the experience of listening to A Mind to Kill the most enjoyable?
Brilliantly written and brilliantly narrated. Don't miss this one. An absolute cracker!
Who was your favorite character and why?
DS Laura Kesey. She's a great contrast to the brash DI Gareth Gravel.
Have you listened to any of Jake Urry’s other performances? How does this one compare?
I've loved all of the audiobooks written by John Nicholl and narrated by Jake Urry. I think this one may be the best yet. Great stuff!
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
The hunters become the hunted...
Any additional comments?
This is one of the best dark psychological thrillers I've ever read or listened to.

Psychological Thriller!!
Rebecca was abused when she was young and the abuser escaped prosecution. Now Rebecca is intent on getting her own revenge on men who are predators. She poses as a young child and lures them to her place. It's a case of once you enter, you never leave!!!
This book was such a hard book to read. My heart broke for Rebecca!! The abuse she suffered when she was young deeply affected her, but no one knows how deep. All she wants is to stop what happened to her, happening to other young people. It was hard to read about what the men sent her, thinking she was only young. This happens in real life!! What those men were sending her, happens in real life!! It's sickening to think there are people out there who do that, and it's frightening to think of what the kids see and how someone can manipulate them to not tell.
Rebecca can justify what she does, but the way she relishes in their pain is hard to bear. The author really makes you see how something can impact a life. While I know the law is there for a reason, I can see why Rebecca too the law into her own hands. Since her own abuser got off, what's to stop others? I didn't like Rebecca, but I understood where she was coming from.
This was the first full book that I've read by this author, but it won't be my last. He has a way of packing a punch into his writing and really making me feel, think and question things. I will definitely have to check out more by him.
Jake Urry read this perfectly. His tones and cadences were spot on and he really gave me the chills when he was portraying the Pedophiles. He really is an amazing narrator.
I was voluntarily provided this audiobook for free from the author, narrator, or publisher. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts.

LOVED THIS
A gripping story of psychosis and revenge, 'A Mind to Kill' is a thriller you won't want to miss! A young woman, abused in childhood, now works for the police by day and is a vigilante killer by night. As she commits more crimes, her grip on her sanity and ability to elude authorities dwindles. Detective Inspector Gravel is called back from a forced vacation to take lead on the case as the dead bodies pile up. I will say no more for fear of spoilers, but I will say that this was the best book I've listened to in a while. Jake Urry is an expert narrator and John Nicholl doesn't miss a beat. I would recommend this book to absolutely anyone who likes the murder/mystery genre.

An incredibly dark and gritty thriller!
A Mind to Kill by John Nicholl was nothing less than I’ve come to expect from Mr. Nicholl…. an incredibly dark and gritty thriller! A Mind to Kill (or really any Nicholl book) is seriously not for the faint of heart or those with a weak stomach!! There are scenes that are conspicuously cringe-worthy… just… very disturbing… yet I was instantly drawn in and could not look away! Nicholl can write a fantastic suspense/thriller.
This book makes you consider the old age question can two wrongs cancel out a wrong and so make it all right? Is it really an eye for an eye? Mr. Nicholl opens your mind to these questions. Is it acceptable to take the law in your own hands when it fails you? When the rules and laws of our country fail us, can we exact revenge? Most people won’t agree with going out and taking care of your unjust. We get to see this type of dilemma through the eyes of Rebecca.
Rebecca was sexually abused as a young child by a pedophile that escaped prosecution. Now as a grown woman, Rebecca is seeking her own type of justice against these sexually deviant men when the system failed her all those years ago. Really though, could you blame any victim if they were to consider an appropriate level of revenge after the law appeared to be working against them? The law is the law but how is condoning a sexual predator acceptable? It isn’t, Rebecca challenges the system in her own way.
We get to catch up again with DI Gareth Gravel, or Grav. The good detective is a bit over-worked these days. He seems to be suffering from burn out and from PTSD. He’s on a long overdue (read mandatory vacation ordered by his superiors). Grray is an angry alcoholic who is barely functioning through life. But, as a detective there is no better (who knew that could ever work)! So when body parts start washing up on the beach, he quickly forgoes his vacation and heads back to work. Grav’s character had so much depth! He was so crass! At times I wasn’t sure if I even actually liked him or not… but it worked for him (and I seriously enjoy him, even when I think he’s a jerk!)!
This is a quick, yet wrenching listen. Jake Urry is a perfect fit for this narration! Urry’s accent and menacing voice gave a chilling narrative that was just perfect for this story. I really enjoyed A Mind to Kill and would recommend it to everyone who enjoys a thriller and books with some sordid, darkness.
I totally found myself on the serial killers side… normally on rooting on the detective. I have to say, here, I found myself supporting Rebecca and cheering her on. The suspense was gripping and I couldn't tear myself away from Rebecca's plot for revenge. Just like in most of Nicholl’s other books, there are scenes of graphic torture that might not appeal to everyone.

Great Psychological Thriller
Rebecca was molested as a child and never got justice. Now a young woman, she is determined to rid the world of deviants like her molester - slowly and painfully. As she descends into madness (or is it clarity?), she methodically begins to carry out her mission. She's doing what the legal system failed to do for her and has assumed the roles of judge, jury and executioner. Yes, our girl's going to be very busy. Come into my parlor....
What a deliciously creepy story! I don't ordinarily root for murderers but I was totally feeling the girl power vibe here. Don't judge. True to the title, the suspense was gripping and I couldn't tear myself away from Rebecca's plot for revenge. However, there are scenes of graphic torture that might not appeal to everyone. Is it wrong that I enjoyed the "victims" getting their due? And oh my gosh, the narration! Jake Urry, with his accent and sinister, menacing voice, gave a narrative that was just perfect for this story. Bravo! I really enjoyed A Mind To Kill and would recommend it.

Great Read/Listen
As a crime thriller I thought it was above average. I liked Rebecca best of all. I could relate to her need for vengeance. Nothing in this book bothered me since I’m sure that what happened in the story happens in life. The narrator did a good job and helped create the mood of various scenes. Good book Mr Nicholl. I look forward to your next book already purchased.

Is it really an eye for an eye?
Is it acceptable to take the law into your own hands when it fails you? When the rules and laws of our country fail us, can we exact revenge? Most people won’t agree with going out and taking care of your unjust. We get to see this type of dilemma through the eyes of Rebecca.
Rebecca was sexually abused as a young child by a pedophile that escaped prosecution. Now as a grown woman, Rebecca is seeking her own type of justice against these sexually deviant men when the system failed her all those years ago. Really though, could you blame any victim if they were to consider an appropriate level of revenge after the law appeared to be working against them? A fascinating British crime novel
"A Mind To Kill" (2017) by John Nicholl is a fascinating British crime novel featuring three main characters: a woman damaged by childhood sexual abuse who takes the law into her own hands by killing pedophiles, the police inspector trying to solve the murders, and the police detective sergeant assisting him. Although hardly new, the story’s insight into all three characters makes it interesting. Strongly recommended, but not for the squeamish. Audiobook provided free in exchange for an honest review.

A Mind To Kill
A Mind To Kill
: John Nicholl
This latest novel by this author is a dark suspenseful thriller. A woman survivor of childhood sexual abuse, whose abuser escaped prosecution becomes a vigilante. She targets other pedophiles and lures them into her web. Will she find peace or will her demons find her?
DI Gravel is gruff and investigates using unorthodox means. Will he catch the vigilante or will she get away with murder?
This novel made me think:
As a mother I find empathy with the female protagonist. Does this say something about my mental state? No it says I am a human being that finds pedophilia outrageous and our judicial system in need of sterner punishment of these degenerates.
The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed. Jake Urry voices this type of novel so well the listener will feel they are in the center of the story.
