Summary

January 1954. Mists cover the hills around Selchester. Someone at the research facility known as the Atomic is leaking secrets to Soviet Russia, and when nuclear scientist Bruno Rothesay goes missing, the British Intelligence Services are convinced he's the mole. Hugo Hawksworth isn't so sure. Then a body turns up, and Hugo's instincts are proven correct. But if Rothesay wasn't selling secrets to the Soviets, who is?

As Hugo digs deeper into buried connections and unlikely coincidences, he knows there's more to this case than his London superiors believe. But following his instincts will pit him against the Establishment - and tangle him once again in the poisonous legacy of the late Lord Selchester.

As he closes in on the truth, Hugo finds himself confronted by an adversary who will stop at nothing, in a case that will prove the most personal of his career.

With a touch of Downton Abbey, a whisper of Agatha Christie and a nod to John Le Carré, A Matter Of Loyalty is the third and final book in this delightfully classic and witty murder-mystery series.

The last story

This has been a lovely series, and I was so pleased that this third book was finished by the authors son. The only downside is that the rest of the series won't be written, unless he changes his mind. Anselm Audley has done a great job of finishing this book, which she had hardly begun before her death.
There are areas of the story which had a slightly different feel to the previous two books, but very little, and I soon forgot it wasn't all written by Elizabeth Edmondson.
More than a mystery, you feel you know the characters and want to know more what happens. Thank you Anselm .

Loved this, and sad that there'll be no more

A nice continuation of the stories in the two preceding books, with the characters and their relationships developing. A mysterious disappearance, a body, suspects, an unpleasant Special Branch inspector, twists and turns... All beautifully narrated by Michael Page.

So sad to learn of the author's untimely death. She will be missed by loved ones, friends and readers. I would have loved to read the rest of the stories she had in mind for these characters, but Anselm Audley left enough pointers when he finished his mother's work to show what she probably had in mind.

Not up to standard- but I know why!

I really enjoyed the first two books in this series. They were very good at epitomising the vibe of post war Britain and the storyline was intriguing, flowing from one book to the next. But I had great difficulty keeping up with this one. It seemed disjointe, hopping from one storyline to the next and getting completely mixed up (or getting me mixed up!) It was not until the last 2 hours of the book that I started to understand what it was all about and was able to listen without constantly zipping back all the time. However, the "afterword" gave me an explanation of the possible reasons. All I can say is, I am glad that there are no more planned!

Ripping yarn but poor narrator

Great Cold War x country house murder mystery but the narration was very very annoying.
The men are all (somewhat confusingly) gruff and the women and girls have varying degrees of awful voices. The half-American schoolgirl is a shocker.
Despite a fair amount of repetition and some rambling unnecessary storylines, I liked the plot. But the hammy narration was hugely distracting.
Probably better in paperback.

Excellent British Murder Mystery

I really enjoyed the three Selchester novels, this being the final one. Great characters that hark back to a cold war 1950s. Very enjoyable and well performed.

Engrossing

This book was right up my street and I can’t say I have any negatives. The characters came to life in this murder mystery as in the others preceding it. I’m sorry that there won’t be any more in the series but am grateful that this one saw the light of day at all. Narration was top notch.

The last part of the Selchester tro

I so enjoyed the three books as I have all her books and am so sorry there are not more of them. The Selchester trilogy has left one wanting more and it was only the fact her son finished it that it was completed. Would have loved more but sadly it was not to be.

*Hugo is in a fix*

Intelligence officer Hugo Hawksworth is still residing at the Selchester Castle with his much younger Sister Georgia. Along with the New Earl and his two daughters

Someone is leaking secrets to the Russians and yet again there is a familiar theme where The ones at the top (in the facility they call ‘The Atomic’ where Hugo is based) think it’s a open and shut case and think they have the suspect locked up. Hugo’s senses tell him otherwise. Now he needs proof.

A body turns up and as Hugo starts to dig deep he is being blocked left right and centre. I am glad to see the old characters from the first two books including Freya and Georgia Hugo’s 13 year old sister who is wise beyond her years may be in danger as obstacles are getting in the way the closer he gets to the truth.

I found this series of book’s quite endearing. Very different to todays crime stories because these are written at a much slower pace and the main drama for me is near the end when it jumps into action action

Wonderful mystery trilogy, difficult narration

I've enjoyed all three books in the series and certainly appreciate that the final book was completed by the author's son (thank you!). However, I've only just endured the narration, finding the narrator's voice grating on my ears. The accents are not always convincing and the production quality is poor.
