Summary

He should never have opened the envelope....

Adam Scott listens to the reading of his father's will, aware that the contents can only be meagre. The Colonel, after all, had nothing to leave - except a letter he had never opened himself, a letter that can only bring further disgrace to the family name. Against his mother's advice, Adam opens the letter, and immediately realizes his life can never be the same again. The contents leave him with no choice but to follow a course his father would have described as a matter of honour.

0ne minor mistake in the reading of the book.

In one passage the reader says of a man “he was in the Royal DRAGON Guards” - He should have said, “he was in the Royal DRAGOON Guards”
It’s a small mistake, but it irritated me!
The book is great, although it did take me a while to get in to it. Once in, it’s a great story.

Good story ruined by narrator

This took s little longer to get into than the usual Archer stories; the clipped, staccato narrative made it difficult to maintain interest. This was aggravated by the numerous Slavic names, only serving to confuse the listener.
That being said, the story managed to hold the imagination, despite the slightly implausible situations in true Archer style.

Always reliable……

Jeffrey Archer is a master of storytelling and this book is no exception. He has original storylines and his attention to detail is exceptional. The stories are written skilfully and hold one’s attention throughout. I personally, also appreciate the use of well-written English, which is sadly lacking in some of his contemporary writers. Thank you once again. PS As the county scorer for Somerset, I also appreciate his references to cricket throughout his books. If he is ever across this way……..!!

Another thrilling adventure from Jeffrey Archer

I thoroughly enjoyed the adventure, trimmed with humour, but as always you’re led through an intricate story which, wonderfully, falls into place right at the end! John Lee reads the story well- I would highly recommend this book.

Gripping if a little Hollywood

Some cheesy, implausible, Hollywood elements, but still a gripping and enjoyable story for all that. Worth reading if you like cold war style thrillers. Some casual sexism that is a little disturbing, but that might be a product of the times in which the book is set rather than the views of the author; hard to say.

Excellent

It took a wee while to get into this book but well worth it. Different from the usual Jeffrey Archer stories but still a great listen.
