Summary

The Mackenzies gather for a clan Christmas and Hogmanay in Scotland. In the chaos of preparations for the celebration - the first of Hart and Eleanor's married life - one of Ian's Ming bowls gets broken, and the family scrambles to save the day. Daniel busily runs a betting ring for everything from the hour Eleanor's baby will arrive, to whether Mac's former-pugilist valet can win a boxing match, to who will be the first of the many guests to be caught under the mistletoe. Ian begins a new obsession, and Beth fears that the loss of one of his precious bowls has made him withdraw once more into his private world.

Nice add-on story

Originally I thought it a waste to read it I'll admit. But it was like sitting with a friend over coffee and talking about how their Christmas was. It is a great showing of how much Ian has improved, how everyone is currently doing and a good lead-in to the books to come. If you are looking for the romance mixed with assassins then you will be disappointed, but if you want to get caught up with an old friend, it's a great listen/read. I love both narrators in this series and that they have a way of making each main character have their own voice. Onto the next book and next until the end of the series... I'll miss them when I'm done, but keep them in my wish list to listen to again when I need a good listen I've heard before.

Charming and beautifully crafted

If you've read and enjoyed the first four books of this series, I'm pretty sure you'll find this story is a delightful gift. Each of the four brothers gets a piece of the action, although it mainly revolves around Ian and his idiosyncracies (and you do need to have read "The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie" in order to "get it").

Jennifer Ashley does an noteworthy job of crafting a Christmas story that advances the characters and doesn't feel like a tacked-on "holiday special." It even has moments with the more minor characters--Daniel Mackenzie, Inspector Fellowes, and the MacBride brothers--that foreshadow books to come in the series.

Angela Dawe isn't my favorite narrator, but she suits this series, and has definitely captured the distinct personalities of each of the four brothers.

Together, facing traumatic situations and joy.

We see the families that we had become acquainted with in the past four books of the series.
Although it is Christmas, drama is still part of this family's lives. However, the conclusion of their lives being better, with addition of wives and children, is something each brother agrees.

Wonderful Christmas story.

This Christmas story was done very well. I was happy to find that all the brothers and their family were written about fairly equally. I loved Ian’s gift to his son and was picturing it vividly in my mind. That would have been quite something to actually witness. I am now on to the next book in the series.

Merry Christmas from the Mackenzie's!

The whole families together how can you not love that. Everyone gets their fair share of time in this book and we see the entire family with the kids and the dogs and the servants all enjoying their time together. It's an excellent feel good book. I wish it was longer but I realized that it was not meant to be a long book. I laughed, I cried, it was a very heartwarming book. Oh and by the end I like Hart more than I had in previous books.

Love the characters interactions in the McKenzie family

Every McKenzie story is so fun to discover more about this family.
The descriptions of the people and places are so well done. I hate to have the story ends.
