Summary

Written by British-born author Frances Hodgson Burnett and first published in 1905, A Little Princess tells the story of young Sara Crewe, privileged daughter of a wealthy diamond merchant. All the other girls at Miss Minchin's school treat Sara as if she truly were a princess. But when Captain Crewe's fortune is sadly lost, Sara's luck changes. Suddenly she is treated no better than a scullery maid.

Sara's fierce determination to maintain her dignity and remain a princess inside has intrigued and delighted listeners for almost 100 years, even inspiring a recent popular feature film.

5 Words: Magic, family, illness, growing up.

I love this children's classic. It's about mysteries and being a child and magic and growing up. It's about friendship and realising who you are and what you can do.

Something that really struck me as I listened to this was how kids today would receive it. I think they'd be shocked at how happy Mary is at getting fat.

This is such an uplifting story, and I loved the hope throughout the pages.

Mary is such a hateful little girl at first but by the end of the book she's grown into something quite different. It's a lovely journey for not only herself but for Dicken and Colin too.

I didn't even mind Colin, even though this is the book that makes me hate that name.

I loved it! I have read it several times in the past so I decided to get an audio book. The narration was good.
Overall, a great book which I would definitely recommend.

This is a book for all who believe in magic.

One word; wow! This is the perfect children's classic. This book is about the coming of age of a young girl. Its also about magic and believing in magic so intensely that it has to be real! This book teaches its readers that even in the face of darkness, there is always hope, even if we cannot see it all of the time. Sarah is the main protagonist in this story and she immediately drew me in to the book. She is intelligent and extraordinarily imaginative, which only makes the story feel more real. She is very kind and generous even when she has nothing. This is something that I absolutely adore about her! Her relationship with Ram Dass and Mr. Carrisford, is one of undeniable friendship and this is what makes the story so uplifting, Miss. Minchin is one of those characters who you love to hate and you can't until she gets her comeuppance! This story is beautifully written from the third person with a tone that is heavy but uplifting, it describes the trauma of story but it also continually looks for things to lift the reader out of the dark situation and into a more magical story. With a back drop of an English girls school in the middle of the 19th century, the setting is perfect for this story of a little girl who was born to stand out from the rest of her schoolmates. The narration of the story was beautiful. It was pleasant to listen to and I loved the different tones for the different characters! It was great narration of a great story!
And to finish on one of my favorite quotes and probably the most famous quotes from the story; “I am a princess. All girls are. Even if they live in tiny old attics. Even if they dress in rags, even if they aren’t pretty, or smart, or young. They’re still princesses.”

This was one if not the best fairy tale I've ever read or listen to.

I have loved the story since childhood but was spoilt for me by poor narration.

Still a great story

This is the classic story of a privileged little girl who finds herself left destitute and alone yet still daring to dream. The best part of the story is when her dreams mysteriously come true, but how? This was one of my favourite stories as a child and I still think it's magical.

For me, the narrator is does not fully do the story justice. It would perhaps have been better read by someone English in order to cope with the accents. I'm not sure what sort of accent Becky the servant girl is supposed to have!

Nevertheless a great story
