Summary

The chimneys of industry rise over Adua, and the world seethes with new opportunities. But old scores run deep as ever.

On the blood-soaked borders of Angland, Leo dan Brock struggles to win fame on the battlefield and defeat the marauding armies of Stour Nightfall. He hopes for help from the crown. But King Jezal's son, the feckless Prince Orso, is a man who specialises in disappointments.

Savine dan Glokta - socialite, investor and daughter of the most feared man in the Union - plans to claw her way to the top of the slag-heap of society by any means necessary. But the slums boil over with a rage that all the money in the world cannot control.

The age of the machine dawns, but the age of magic refuses to die. With the help of the mad hillwoman Isern-i-Phail, Rikke struggles to control the blessing, or the curse, of the Long Eye. Glimpsing the future is one thing, but with the guiding hand of the First of the Magi still pulling the strings, changing it will be quite another....

Brilliant as usual

The saga seamlessly flows on . Brutal, dark and in places funny. Some original characters killed off to make way for the new. How much longer will Bayas/Abercrombie let Arch Lector Glokta live ?

Fantastic

Abercrombie at his best. A fine sequel to his original trilogy and so wonderful to be back in this terrible world he has created

Gritty, dark, bloody and brilliant!

Really superb next chapter after the first law trilogy, great new characters but still keeping the depth of the much loved old ones. Fantastic. Steven Pacey makes this already incredible book, absolutely stellar. No narrator brings characters alive like him.

Back to the First Law Universe

Joe is back, but with a little cry rather than loud roar. The first book of another trilogy from my favourite author!!!!
I read this book off the back of the brilliant revenge book Best Served Cold so this book had a lot to live up to.Unfortunately it was lacking in his usual strong story and well developed complicated characters. There is still touches of class dialogue between characters and some old faces crop up which I’m sure will be deployed more in the coming books, but overall not his best but I’ll finish on a positive note and the last act leaves me wanting to find out how Prince Orzo and the rest of the cast of characters get on so in that regard he’s done his job.

Sensational

Utterly mortified that the story's over and at having to wait for the next book. The best fantasy series I've experienced since Lord of The Rings, and Steven Pacey absolutely nails it as always.

Good but needed MORE Glokta, Dogman and Jezal.

Still good, but we miss our old friends. (and foes) Steven Pacey excells as always.

Undeniably brilliant

Joe and Steven are two souls that where destined to Meet.
Joe has a skill of not just breathing life into characters but resurrect what could be long lost heroes of old.
Its hard to imagine Joe's work without pacey's skill though, I cannot imagine it, after listening to every book at least twice, pacey is a master.
