'I couldn't see the sea from my bedroom but I could hear the waves breaking in the distance. They reminded me that I was on a tiny island. And I was trapped.'

There has never been a murder on Alderney.

It's a tiny island, just three miles long and a mile and a half wide. The perfect location for a brand-new literary festival. Private Investigator Daniel Hawthorne has been invited to talk about his new book. The writer, Anthony Horowitz, travels with him.

Very soon they discover that all is not as it should be. Alderney is in turmoil over a planned power line that will cut through it, desecrating a war cemetery and turning neighbour against neighbour.

The visiting authors - including a blind medium, a French performance poet and a celebrity chef - seem to be harbouring any number of unpleasant secrets.

When the festival's wealthy sponsor is found brutally killed, Alderney goes into lockdown and Hawthorne knows that he doesn't have to look too far for suspects.

There's no escape. The killer is still on the island. And there's about to be a second death...

I have really enjoyed all 3 ‘Hawthorne’ books. They are so cleverly written. The author makes a wonderful and humorous contribution as the stooge, Hawthorne is such an interesting character, the plots are excellent and it’s so well read by Rory Kinnear. A real page turner. Highly recommend.

Absolutely loved it

I enjoyed the story and it caught my eye being set in Alderney. I also found the pronunciation of Bailiwick names made me giggle! Torode should be Tor-rode and as for Charles it's Le Measurer (as in tape measurer) honest, despite how it looks 😂

Good fun mystery,

I am normally very lazy about writing reviews but felt I had to write one for this book. I loved every minute of it. I'm not sure I would have enjoyed it as much to read but listening to it was an absolute treat.
The character of Daniel Hawthorne was done so brilliantly by Rory Kinnear, as were the other characters. You can actually picture Hawthorne and relate to him as a certain type - a type we have all encountered at some time or other.
Along with Sean Barrett, Rory Kinnear is among the top narrators on Audible. The narration can really make or break a book and I have ended up returning a number of books due to terrible narration.

Fantastic narration and a gripping story

A more twisty and twisted third outing for Hawthorn with ‘Tony’ in tow. Spot on.

Perfect Hawthorn
