Summary

Bloomsbury presents A Heart so Fierce and Broken by Brigid Kemmerer, read by Melissa Bayern, Matt Reeves, Kate Handford and Davis Brooks.

In the sequel to New York Times best-selling A Curse so Dark and Lonely, Brigid Kemmerer returns to the world of Emberfall in a lush fantasy where friends become foes and love blooms in the darkest of places.

Find the heir, win the crown.

The curse is finally broken, but Prince Rhen of Emberfall faces darker troubles still. Rumors circulate that he is not the true heir and that forbidden magic has been unleashed in Emberfall. Although Rhen has Harper by his side, his guardsman Grey is missing, leaving more questions than answers.

Win the crown, save the kingdom.

Grey may be the heir, but he doesn't want anyone to know his secret. On the run since he destroyed Lilith, he has no desire to challenge Rhen - until Karis Luran once again threatens to take Emberfall by force. Her own daughter Lia Mara sees the flaws in her mother's violent plan, but can she convince Grey to stand against Rhen, even for the good of Emberfall?

The heart-pounding, compulsively listenable saga continues as loyalties are tested and new love blooms in a kingdom on the brink of war.

Great Sequel

A Curse So Dark and Lonely was one of my top reads in 2019! I love a Beauty and the Beast retelling and this is up there with some of the best. I have been waiting for this for what seems like forever.

The last book was told almost exclusively from the POV of Rhen and Harper. This book is told mostly from the POV of Grey and Lia Maria. In the first book, I loved Rhen. I loved him so damn much but his fears, his fears, they just take over. It makes him very difficult to like.

Grey and Lia are fantastic characters. Both grow so much throughout this book. Grey goes from loyal Guardsman to the rightful heir. But he does it so reluctantly and naturally that it doesn't feel like a betrayal. Lia has always been strong and a natural leader but she doesn't realise it. Her sister has been chosen as the heir and that's the end of it for her.

It was clear from early on how this story was going to progress. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the journey very much. I also enjoyed the whole host of side characters that we got to meet.

I am not very excited for book 3 which cannot come soon enough!

This Book had me rapt

The second part of a well rounded story, set in a believable world. I loved it. The whole thing was enhanced by the excellent narration. I await the inevitable third book with anticipation.

Better than the first book

A really easy listen that developed characters from the first book. Ends on a cliff hanger.

Keep on reading!

Book two in the Curse-breaker series is absolutely brilliant! I enjoyed book one (a curse so dark and lovely) but there were moments that I felt like I was reading a child’s book - Harper’s character does not have much depth but there was something overall that kept me interested.

This book is great! A story of friendship, romance and adventure- more colourful & interesting than the first. It goes beyond the main characters and brings so much more to the book with the fabulous Grey, Lia Mara and so on...

Highly recommend

Amazing Voice Acting, Story a bit of a letdown

After loving the first book in this series, this second one doesn't live up to the hype. But it was still an enjoyable listen, and I absolutely loved the narrators, especially the female narrator. You could really hear the emotion and meaning in every line and it made her chapters seem to go so quickly! The male narrator was great too but she really stood out. Looking forward to the third book as well.

A good story

I loved this story and can't wait for the next one. The ending explained so much of what was happening. I liked the overall male narrator but the female narrator was a bit shrill in tone escpecially when doing the voices of the queen and sister (mostly at the beginning)

The Ending (no spoilers)

Compared to the first book, I really didn’t like this one until the ending that through me out of bed and ripped away my breath. Completely worth it and I look forward to the third installment. The five stars are for the ending.

bravooooooo

I have to admit I had my doubts in the middle of reading,I felt it lacks the charms and adventures of first book and I really missed rhen and Harper ,I felt some chapters of grey and lia can be replaced by rhen and Harper for diversity but the epilogue and last chapter just wooow moved the wholec book to a whole new level and made me understand the complete intended absence of rhen and Harper just woow chapeauⁿ for brigid how she transformed a breathtaking retelling of beauty and the beast to something more and beyond explanation and chapeau for her for reflecting human nature and complexity of feelings ,how I love rhen,Harper, grey and lia ,how I cannot choose a side ,how I understand the reasons and fears and fights and reasons for each character ,how it truly reflect the true nature of human,no one is 1oo percent good or evil we human are not perfect we r controlled by our owns reasons and what we see right and how we r as humans always in continuing battle to get things right ,no author and I mean no author made me feel this heart broken, confused, week ,understanding, compassionate, afraid like Brigid, she really can reflect human emotions ,chapeau for Brigid and ahhh my heart is broken for both rhen and grey can January come early?I am dying here and chapeau for one of the best authors and to the best young adult novels written

Distracting Narrator

I was extremely excited to start the sequel to A Curse So Dark and Lonely, but the narrator reading for Lia Mara's voice is often shrill, with strange inflections. It's distracting and doesn't lend itself well to the "serious" and "clever" character. I found myself wishing hard for the other narrators to take over and hating the character.

absolutely LOVED the first book. Couldn't put it down. For some reason it took me a little longer to get into this one but once it got me hooked, I couldn't stop. I'll be impatiently waiting for the 3rd book!

Great sequel!

I liked this even more than the first book! Grey is a great character and I really liked the addition of Lia Mara. Grey is pretty selfless and trying to do what he thinks is right and will help Rhen and the kingdom. He likes Harper, but she doesn't return his romantic feelings so it's good to see him find someone else who does care for him. Lia Mara was pretty good for the most part. She knows her mother is bad and that her sister is following in those footsteps. I wish she had stood up for what she thought was right sooner, but her relationships with Grey, Jake, and Tycho were sweet and she did try to do the right thing.
The story flowed pretty well, the rotating points of view helped with that. I would've liked more of Harper, to see what's happening in the castle. The ending was crazy and now I'm sad that we have to wait so long!

I liked this one better than the first!

Really got to know some old characters more and meet some amazing new ones! Voice actors were great! However, I would love for future books to always use the same voice anytime that character speaks. Instead of having the one voice actor speak for all the characters during their chapter.

Meh...

I was so excited for this book to come out but I gatta say, I was let down. This book is no where near the book that A Curse so Dark and Lonely is. I will stick with this series to the end because I am invested already. Book 3 better be ah-mazing!
