Summary

The thrilling new novel from the acclaimed author of Murder on Mustique, based on the childhood described in her international best seller Lady in Waiting.

January 1950. Lady Anne Coke, daughter of the fifth earl of Leicester, is in Scunthorpe on a business trip when she is called home after a sudden death in the family. She returns to Holkham Hall to discover a mystery: her beloved grandfather has been found dead at the bottom of a flight of stairs with a valuable piece of jewellery in his pocket. No one can find a cause of death, and some even suspect foul play from the ghost who supposedly haunts the house. But Anne's suspicions are aroused; she grew close to her grandfather when they lived together during the war, and she is determined to discover the truth.

During World War II, Holkham Hall was an army base with large sections out of bounds, and 11-year-old Anne was in the care of a new governess, whom she hated and believed to be deceitful. Although she had been told to stay away from certain parts of the house, Anne used the secret passageways and the cellars to move around unnoticed. And something she saw then could unlock the mystery of her grandfather's death now....

Full of rich historical detail, this is a gripping novel of wartime secrets, intrigue and deceit.

Entertaining

I guessed early on who the 'baddies' were but this did not detract from the story. Thoroughly enjoyed the book and was rooting for Anne to escape her governess.

A perfect word picture of it’s time.

A combination of pictures of life as it was lived in those days and the life of a wonderful character Anne Glenconner. She writes with a captivating style and at no time is her story slow or boring. Her amazing experience of a full and eccentric time in our history is mesmerising. A thoroughly enjoyable book.

Shallow

I really liked the historic setting and context - but the story was shallow and too predictable.

Nice old fashioned story

Very enjoyable story in the old fashioned story telling way. Lots of good characters woven into a plot. The governess was particularly well done. Stuff of nightmares…!!

Miranda Raison is the best reader on Audible

Beautifully read! Story is gentle in places and deliberately difficult to hear in others. Miranda makes this worth listening to.

Loved this book

A captivating read about life at Holkam albeit part fictional to run alongside real events. Definitely recommend as all Anne Glenconner’s books are so enjoyable to read.

Thoroughly thrilling

Loved this. Really well written and well read. After reading the author’s autobiography this was like experiencing a certain portion of her life in more detail - with added murder and mystery!
