A sizzling fantasy romance from the No.1 Sunday Times bestseller & TikTok sensation Danielle Jensen, perfect for fans of Sarah J Maas & A Court of Thorns and Roses.
Trapped in an unwanted marriage, Freya dreams of becoming a warrior – and of putting an axe in her controlling husband’s back.
But those dreams become a nightmare when he makes a deal with their fanatical ruler, and she’s forced into a fight to the death. To survive, she must reveal her deepest secret: she possesses a drop of a goddess’s blood and magic that will unite their nation beneath the one who controls her fate.
Believing he’s destined to be king, the ruler binds Freya with a blood oath and orders his fierce but charming son to train her to fight, to control her magic . . . and to make sure no one lays a hand on her.
But the greatest test of all may be resisting her forbidden attraction to the son of her enemy.

As I most often do, I read the book and listened to the audiobook together. Wow, am I glad I did. The narrator was absolutely incredible!👏 She's from Norway, I think, so hearing the peoples' and place names pronounced correctly was an absolute joy. Her inflexion and ability to change voices for each character were so on point! Best audiobook of the year, so far, for me!⭐️
This story invokes so much imagery. Not only do you picture the places, but also the smells, clothing, and gruffness of the men, especially. I felt like I was sat around a roaring fire with jugs of mead and smelly vikings hollering 'SKOL'!🍻
I found Freya a bit annoying. On one hand she was a fighter, brave, and prepared to stand up for herself. Then she'd act all weak willed, cowed by her newest husband and his first wife, whilst letting a fate she *isn’t* bound to, drag her along!🤷🏻♀️ It didnt make much sense to me.
I liked Bjorn, especially without his shirt on.🥵 He, like Freya, was born with a drop of Gods blood. His God was Tyr, so he wields a flaming axe!🪓 Where Freyas' was Hlin which makes her the Shield Maiden. They're bound together by his Father, her husband, insisting the Gods want him to protect her!🤨 Freya and Bjorn have to fight their desires for one another.🔥
All of the 'Jarls' (Lords) want to either control freya themselves or want her dead. A seer prophecy said she'd bring the land together under one king!👀
I'd give the story 3.5 stars and the audiobook 5 stars, individually. So collectively I'll give it 4 Stars.⭐️

I don't want to say too much regarding the actual story as I think going into this blind would give you the best experience of it. So on that note what I will say is I enjoyed the banter & tension between Freya & Bjorn our MMC, I really enjoyed Bjorns character and demeanor throughout. Freya is a complex character and there were aspects of her I loved but also others I found grating, on occasion she acted like an entitled and petulant child and I'm not about that so for that reason the book didn't quite make a full five star rating for me. The story itself was fast paced, entertaining and I can't wait to see where book 2 will take us after that ending.
I'm glad I decided to do this as an audiobook as I know that even with the author & narrator putting together a pronunciation guide for the authors website... I would have unintentionally butchered the fu*ck out of the names, places, beings & things etc in this one and I love that the author chose a Norwegian speaking narrator to ensure the authenticity of the language, her performance was excellent. 🌶🌶
Entertaining throughout

This was a great story. From the opening page it was transporting you to Viking times & territory, effortlessly. Suspense & drama was high. The scrip between characters was flowing with ease of the power hungry, betrayal, greet, violence, dread, consequences and humoured banter— on this journey of self discovery and an old prophesy come to life. With a lowly shield-maiden standing in the midst of Gods and Man, Truth and Lies.
That ending was cataclysmic. My first journey into this author’s world and my, oh my, wasn’t I entertained to fever pitch. Surely, I never wanted this to end.
I can’t wait to see what troubles await Freya and Bjorn in Norderland. The plot has surely thicken.
A must listen to. Amazing over all. Cannot fault it, alas, perhaps only to demand - where the heck is book #2 (grinning)?!
