BOOK 5 IN THE BESTSELLING CANON CLEMENT MYSTERY SERIES

'Another clever, twisty read' i Paper
'You'll want to take a front row pew in Champton while this delicious series unfolds' Janice Hallett

It's spring 1990, and in Champton the whole village is aflutter as a glamorous Hollywood movie has taken over Lord de Floures' Champton House as its set location.

As the actors and extras hired from the village don their farthingales, gowns and crowns for a masque set in the 1600s, a murder interrupts filming on set - and it's an ingenious one . . .

Can Daniel solve the mystery with help from his sidekick, Detective Sergeant Neil Vanloo - even when things are so sticky between them?©2025 Mistramark Ltd

Hurrah for the fifth coming of Canon Daniel Clement! (Caroline Chartres)

The “whodunnit” element is once again secondary to the warm perceptiveness of human thoughts and behaviour, which was especially moving this time.
And the downward-spiralling rectory dinner episode was beautifully written 🤣
Lovely narration again by RC, and now I’m used to the way he delivers dialogue, it’s much less confusing.

I really enjoy these stories and hearing the author tell the tale made it even better. I cannot wait until we see the characters come to life on television.

I loved this book from beginning to end.
Beautifully read by Richard and with an ending that I did not guess. The last few paragraphs added an extra, poignant surprise twist which I hope will lead to future involvement of the characters involved.

Absorbing from the beginning

I have always liked this series which combines so many of the things that interest me, cozy crime, church history, LGBTIQ+ and diversity and inclusion, and general intelligent conversation in a 1980s setting. I also enjoy that it is narrated by the author, who as we know is a Borderline National Trinket. But this is definitely the best so far.

The best one so far

A bit confusing at the start, compared to other of the authors books. But a really good book, full of side information and fascinating nuggets of recondite knowledge.
