Summary

'It turns out there are plenty of us: the unlucky ones. The women whose journey into motherhood, or whose yearning for more children, has yet to be fulfilled by the universe. I am certain that in so many parts of my story I really am not the only one to have gone through it, so it makes sense to write it all down. For all of us - and for any parents who might go through some of what we did in the future, too. So here it is, our journey to a rainbow. A story of fertility, trying again and, above all, hope.'

After the death of her three-day-old son, Teddy, in 2016, Elle Wright never expected what came next - that the path to bringing home a living child could be so winding. Elle's loss was followed by three and a half years of endless waiting.

She and her husband waited for test results, hospital appointments and so many new procedures to help with their experience of secondary infertility. This wait included friends announcing their happy news whilst Elle was experiencing three rounds of IVF and the loss of three more babies.

Months and years slipped by, of immense physical and emotional toll, and still those two lines were just out of reach. Faced with constant questions, drugs, negative tests, tears, loss, frustration and so many more tears, throughout it all Elle managed to still believe that one day it would happen for her, somehow....

A Bump in the Road reflects the reality of becoming a parent for thousands of people like Elle who have difficulty conceiving in the UK today. It captures Elle's journey to a rainbow, comforting through her beautifully written words with a story of fertility that might just reflect yours, too.

Heartbreakingly honest

As someone who has lost multiple pregnancies and struggled through IVF to get to our rainbow so much of this book resonates. Elle has opened her heart and journey to us and I was so invested in her story that I bought a physical copy of the book and the audio book. Thank you for sharing and making me feel less alone in all of the emotions (and dark humour) that came with loss, IVF, infertility and pregnancy after loss.

Very emotive

I so enjoyed listening to your story. Even though I laugh and cried, held my breath throughout. It felt like I travelled your highs and lows. My heart ached for you and your family so much. But I’m sure little Teddy will have been so proud of his mummy for being so brave in sharing such intimate memories and experiences for the benefit of others in educating them in the journey of grief. Thank you.

Humour heartbreak determination and light

A book filled with humour, heartbreak, determination and light. Elles books have made me feel so much less alone on my own journey through baby loss. So many parts I could relate to so much. A book not only for those having gone through the trauma of baby loss or infertility but also amazing for those with friends and family that have been touched by this and really everyone in between. There was certainly both laugher and tears, wonderfully written.

I couldn’t stop listening.

I follow Elle on Instagram, so knowing how the book would end made it less heart breaking to listen to.

The book isn’t just for women struggling to conceive
Its a huge support for women struggling because they’ve lost their baby and see no light. It’s for people struggling to understand, people struggling to find the words and people that have never struggled and don’t know how to support someone they love going through the loss of a baby or struggling to conceive.

It’s beautifully written. I can’t say I wouldn’t listen again.

I did cry listening to it but it didn’t leave me feeling sad, it left me feeling grateful.

Elle, I think you are amazing.

Heroic, heartfelt and just beautiful

I truly loved this, from start to finish. I've come away with a tremendous amount of empathy, respect and understanding, not only for Elle but for people who have lost a child, and how triggering and upsetting however well meaning- those inquisitive questions people ask, can have on women. I am so so happy Elle and Nico got their beautiful baby girl, a beautiful little sister for Teddy.

I really couldn't reccomend this book enough, heart wrenching it may be at times, I really did enjoy it.

What a rainbow truly means

I don’t have the words to fully say how beautiful, powerful, heartbreaking and inspiring this book truly is. For every type of mother or mother to be this book will resonate. Even if you never struggle this book gives you an insight how to provide support to women that will. Thank you for this book

A must read

I have to admit this book comes with a warning as I devoured a good chunk of this book driving- not a good idea as I cried many tears of sadness and joy following Elle’s journey through further baby loss, secondary infertility and pregnancy after loss. As a fellow member of the baby loss community I could empathise with many of the emotions and anxiety she faced, but as someone who then very quickly was able to have two more babies I found it a really helpful insight to understanding the trials and tribulations when having babies isn’t as easy as “shelling peas”. I wholeheartedly recommend it for those inside the baby loss and/or infertility communities as a way of feeling you’re not so alone, but also for those outside these communities in order to understand how to support people going through these traumatic circumstances. On top of that it’s wonderfully written and the end of the journey really is pure magic.

Heartbreaking and hopeful in equal measures

What an incredible book. I cried the whole way through. What Elle and her husband went through is unimaginable. The heartache and pain that just kept on coming... I thought it was wonderfully written, so open and honest. I found this book so helpful personally, even though they had been through so much they kept going and kept hope and got their rainbow in the end. I would recommend this book to anyone going through infertility or loss, or those trying support them. Thank you Elle for writing such an important book.
