About this listen

A brilliantly claustrophobic and twisty thriller from the critically acclaimed author Catherine Ryan Howard.

No one even knew they were together. Now one of them is dead.

Fifty-six days ago. Ciara and Oliver meet in a supermarket queue in Dublin and start dating the same week COVID-19 reaches Irish shores.

Thirty-five days ago. When lockdown threatens to keep them apart, Oliver suggests they move in together. Ciara sees a unique opportunity for a relationship to flourish without the scrutiny of family and friends. Oliver sees a chance to hide who - and what - he really is.

Today. Detectives arrive at Oliver's apartment to discover a decomposing body inside.

Can they determine what really happened, or has lockdown created an opportunity for someone to commit the perfect crime?

Critic reviews

"Catherine Ryan Howard has become my go-to writer for utterly absorbing, original stories with a killer twist and 56 Days delivers all this and more." (Jo Spain, number one best-selling author of The Confession)

"Clever, tender and all too convincing, it's the kind of book you read in one breathless setting to get to the truth." (Erin Kelly, author of He Said/She Said)

"An utterly brilliant and completely satisfying pageturner." (Catherine Kirwan)

Good storyline and twists.
The back & forth of the timeline was exasperating at times when the same content was trotted out verbatim, just from the perspective of another character.

The author went to some lengths it seemed to make the language more US appropriate with several mentions of sneakers, carts, etc. But those efforts seemed pointless when the ‘Taoiseach’ was referred to several times - as those references won’t help the Yanks!

The most grating part was the narrator. I’ve listened to several audiobooks over the last couple of years and a narrator can really create an immersive experience for the listener by making an effort to make characters sound different. Well don’t expect that here!!!

This was a narrator in the most basic sense - the equivalent of seeing an author read an excerpt from her book at a book launch. Completely vanilla.

I will actively avoid any other books ‘narrated’ by this person again as she simply doesn’t have the vocal range, dynamism & creativity to bring the story to life.

Enjoyable but over-hyped. Narrator is terrible.

Enjoyed this book, it is clever, topical and held my attention. Each character is well-thought out and the premie is gripping. The only reason I have deducted a star is for the annoying Americanisms such as 'cart' for shopping trolley, 'garbage' for rubbish, 'sneakers' for trainers and 'lobby' for hall/front entrance. I understand the need for the language to be understood in the US but the changing of the Irish vernacular was grating.

Really good news different story

I didn't like the narrator but I pushed past it as the story itself was really good

Great story
