Summary

"Just then, a train of thought rumbled into motion and a soft voice asked me a question. It was almost a whisper. ‘What are you doing here?’ it said. ‘You are building a career, Anna,’ came the reply from another more sinister voice. ‘But are you building a life?’ said the soft voice again. And for that I had no answer."

Disillusioned with corporate London life and with no previous experience as a long-distance cyclist, Anna decides to clamber atop a beautiful pink bicycle (named Boudica) and set out on an 11,000-mile journey on her own, through each and every state of the USA. Dodging floods, blizzards and electrical storms, she pedals side by side with mustangs of the Wild West, through towering redwood forests, past the snow-capped peaks of the Rocky Mountains and on to the volcanos of Hawaii.

Along the way, she meets record-breaking grandmas, sings with Al Green at a gospel service, and does her best to avoid becoming a grizzly bear's dinner. 50 Shades of the USA is a down-to-earth, heartfelt, and hilarious account of an adventure through a country well-known, but far less well-understood. It is a stunning tale of self-discovery told through the eyes of a woman who couldn't help but wonder if there was more to life, and more to America, too.

Anna knows how to tell a story

it's a great book regardless but with Anna telling the story to you, its awesome. I listen while running and have had to stop more than once to laugh. laughing is not conducive to great breathing technique

Inspiring

I bought this to listen to on a long cycling tour, for a bit of inspiration while I rode. I thought I'd listen to the first chapter in the week beforehand to get a feel for it. I finished listening to Anna read her book in a couple of days and a few days before I left for the actual trip!! I just couldn't stop; She's a charming narrator... loved her attempts at the accents, very funny. I highly recommend the book and will definitely be listening to more adventures from Anna McNuff!

Epic insight into human nature

An epic story told with so much energy, colour and insight into all aspects of what makes us human - mega adventurer or not - this was a great listen.

Plus any adventure book that finishes with “send me a pigeon” is one that has something for everyone.

Inspiring adventure

What a great journey. Anna's chatty style took a little getting used to, but then it felt like I was listening to a friend.

Another fabulous book by Anna McNuff

Anna has to be one of the best narrators out there. From page one she whisks you up and takes you on her awesome adventure riding the 50 states of the USA. Anna's enthusiasm brings the book to life and by the end of it you'll be planning your own little adventure.

Faith Restored

I was recommended Anna by a friend who REALLY loves her as she’s “sooooo nice”! I was nervous as I’m not a fan of overly perky people, but I don’t think I realised how much I needed a bit of a perky pick me up! This book will restore your faith in the kindness of humanity. But watch out - it’s already got this 45 year old trying to work out how she can fit an adventure in to her life!!

Plucky British Chick Faces Certain Death: Lives!

This is ONE case where the author reads the book and the audio is BETTER because of it! Part travelogue, part comedy, part philosophical musings, filled with a plethora of colorful characters and harrowing escapades told by the most enthusiastic adventurer since Dory from "Finding Nemo," and you've got a fantastic romp that will leave you in stitches while pondering your daily grind wondering when you should take up your own adventure! Brava! Listen NOW!!!

Great narrative about an epic adventure

A ride like this is on my bucket list and it was a pleasure to read about another person's experience taking on the challenge, and a Brit, no less!. As an American, I always find non-American perspectives on America fascinating, especially if that person spends some quality time WITH Americans, not just IN America. I loved the experiences Anna chose to write about, but would have loved even more of them, each one a story among itself for sure. Good on you Anna for narrating the book too.

As a soon-to-be independently published author, I look forward to supporting another one like Anna here and reading her other books.

One of my favorite adventure stories!

I can't recommend this book enough. Anna's writing style, attention to detail, incredible storytelling, and charming British accent are ace.
You truly feel like you are on this incredible cycling journey with her. It's uplifting and inspiring throughout the high and lows of her life changing expedition. This book has left me with the craving for more adventures in my own life and the motivation to embark on them.
