Summary

"Just then, a train of thought rumbled into motion and a soft voice asked me a question. It was almost a whisper. ‘What are you doing here?’ it said. ‘You are building a career, Anna,’ came the reply from another more sinister voice. ‘But are you building a life?’ said the soft voice again. And for that I had no answer."

Disillusioned with corporate London life and with no previous experience as a long-distance cyclist, Anna decides to clamber atop a beautiful pink bicycle (named Boudica) and set out on an 11,000-mile journey on her own, through each and every state of the USA. Dodging floods, blizzards and electrical storms, she pedals side by side with mustangs of the Wild West, through towering redwood forests, past the snow-capped peaks of the Rocky Mountains and on to the volcanos of Hawaii.

Along the way, she meets record-breaking grandmas, sings with Al Green at a gospel service, and does her best to avoid becoming a grizzly bear's dinner. 50 Shades of the USA is a down-to-earth, heartfelt, and hilarious account of an adventure through a country well-known, but far less well-understood. It is a stunning tale of self-discovery told through the eyes of a woman who couldn't help but wonder if there was more to life, and more to America, too.

Magical, inspiring and entertaining!

Wow! Or Wowsers as I expect Anna would say 😁. What an fabulous story of an epic trip... in told with honesty and such warmth. You feel like you are on the journey with Anna; willing her on the way to Hawaii. She builds in you a sense of belief that anything is possible. Such an engaging story teller...next time I am asked who would come to my imaginary dinner party my first guest would be Anna! Thanks so much for sharing your wonderful story.

Fabulous!

Absolutely loved hearing Anna’s tales from this adventure. She is clearly an awesome and inspiring woman, whilst remaining down to earth and ultra-relatable. The book is a perfect mixture of detail, emotion and comedy value! Have now listened to all Anna’s books and can’t wait for the next instalment about her Barefoot adventure.

A great escape

This bike adventure was a great escape for me during Covid days not be able to travel which is my all time love, enabled me to relax and laugh with Anna on her epic bike ride.
She is entertaining apart from her lousy American accents! Initially her OTT voice can be wearing but I got used to it and her honesty and enthusiasm.
Probably the most memorable moments were the lovely people that she met along the way.
I just wish I was 28 again and could do the bike journey myself!
Really enjoyed it I am such a sucker for real life stories which will suit anyone who has traveled a lot through USA and Canada and is into extended raw life travel.

Plucky British Chick Faces Certain Death: Lives!

This is ONE case where the author reads the book and the audio is BETTER because of it! Part travelogue, part comedy, part philosophical musings, filled with a plethora of colorful characters and harrowing escapades told by the most enthusiastic adventurer since Dory from "Finding Nemo," and you've got a fantastic romp that will leave you in stitches while pondering your daily grind wondering when you should take up your own adventure! Brava! Listen NOW!!!

Great narrative about an epic adventure

A ride like this is on my bucket list and it was a pleasure to read about another person's experience taking on the challenge, and a Brit, no less!. As an American, I always find non-American perspectives on America fascinating, especially if that person spends some quality time WITH Americans, not just IN America. I loved the experiences Anna chose to write about, but would have loved even more of them, each one a story among itself for sure. Good on you Anna for narrating the book too.

As a soon-to-be independently published author, I look forward to supporting another one like Anna here and reading her other books.

A fun adventure

This was a very enjoyable escape. Especially during the year at home. I very much enjoyed hopping on my bike and pedaling around on Anna’s adventures.
The author is the reader, so while the excitement is there, it is more like a friend reading to you, not a pro. She exclaims loudly often enough that I definitely listened to this only while awake, and definitely not when trying to unwind or fall asleep. Overall, I am looking forward to Anna’s next book.

Best book in a long time!

The story is great and so is Anna's narration. Check out her website so you can picture her on these adventures. What I loved most was how open she was to new experiences and people quite different from herself. No judgement of others , looked for (and this found) kindness in the intentions of others (with a few exceptions, of course). So joyful yet gripping to listen to as I trudged on my 4-mile walks. Hard to complain about those when Anna was cycling throughout the USA with her life on her back. I was so sorry when it ended. I now want to explore my own county more than ever!

Anna McNuff

Just amazing...all around. A wonderful personality, along with a very strong will of achieving what goals she has set out to conquer. The adventures and stories were beyond interesting to listen to. She has found her calling to create adventure on many levels and dress it all up with personality plus to keep us entertained and motivated.
Thank you-hopefully you will be able to continue to do this for many more years to come!

Fantastic Adventure Journal!

I love travel journals, and I love them even more when they are narrated by authors that turn their experiences and stories into engaging and entertaining performance. Anna knocks it out of the park in this book!

I had no idea who Anna McNuff was prior to buying this audio book, and now I am fascinated by her epic adventures that go well beyond just this trip through the 50 U.S. states.

Some of my favorite tidbits of the book are the vocal impressions of the American locals she encountered along the way. Simply excellent and very funny.

Thank you, Anna!
