Good for the price...
But unfortunately marred - badly marred - by a myriad of mispronounciations. Not only the usual 'big words ' like cyclopean or Cthulu, but fairly ordinary words like modicum (mode-ee-cam) and generous (tenee-BROS) Really annoying...
The readers sentence structuring, too, is dreadful, and sounds only marginally better than the automated 'audio' one gets when your Kindle 'reads' a non-Audible book.
Quite a s bad is the lack of even the tiniest pause between chaptets, so the title of the new chapter commencing is tacked into the end of the last sentence of the one before.
The stories themselves are a pretty good, very comprehensive collection, and you get a lot of them for under a pound, but the (dismal) quality of the narration made me wish it was a printed volume instead.

Some Good Stories With Bad Narration
I quite like traditional weird fiction and ghost stories, of which there are some good ones here but the collection is seemingly narrated by a semi-literate. I can forgive the bad pronunciation of British towns and counties, as painful on the ear as they are, but the narrator's inability to read "anecdote" as "anecdote", instead repeatedly using "antidote" is shameful. There are many occasions where words are mispronounced. This was initially quite amusing but coupled with the monotone reading and horrendous attempts at accents it all serves to grate. I appreciate this was a cheap buy but I can't believe just how bad the narration is.

poor performance
The performer is unfamiliar with the pronunciation of a lot of British towns and cities (a shame, since many of the stories and writers are based in the UK). There were also many mistakes in the pronunciation of words that are fairly common in the English language, that unfortunately interrupted the flow of the story

ehhh....
Right for the price, the narration isn't terrible, but it lacks interest or emotion, though not unpleasant. This audio book has plenty of content. Some of these stories are genuinely interesting, but many are only so-so. I wish chapters were named, it would make revisiting the good stories easier. I have one more thing to say, in this reading of H.P Lovecraft's, Decendents, they pronounced it necro-MONIC-con and it made me a little sad, especially since 30 seconds prior they had pronounced it correctly, odd.

Do NOT buy this if you are expecting MODERN horror
This is not a collection of modern horror stories, as some buyers are expecting (understandable considering the lurid picture the publishers chose for the cover, bordering on false advertising!) These are old classics, written more than a hundred years ago, and are for fans who like the language, pacing, and subtle, atmospheric chills found in these stories---as I do. And at this price (less than 70 cents for over 15 hours of audio), it is a must have for my collection. As in all anthologies, there will be some stories that you skip over. There is also a volume 2 in this series, also at an unbelievable price. (There are some problems with the pauses in this audio. Is a long pause a cue to tell you that a new story is beginning or is it just a pause in the story you are reading? At other times, there may be no pause between stories. This can be confusing. For the price, I can live with this.) The narration is more than adequate for this bargain selection.

Excellent old stories using archaic words.
Difficult read for narrator, but many mispronounced words and repeated phrases. Enunciation good. So little pause between stories that it is difficult to catch the transition.

The performer is not great
While the texts are good the narrator does not pause between stories. It is very difficult to tell when you have left one story after another.

Dull
I guess I have to read this on my own. Narrator is so dull, it is hard to keep my attention. almost robotic.

No wonder it was only $.69
Non of these stories are horrifying in any way. Pretty much all of them are entirely way too long and wordy. But, what can I expect from paying only $.69. The only plus is that it's a good way to fill blank space or to have as background noise.
