Summary

Named a Guardian Best Audiobook of 2020, this optimistic and agenda-setting look at the climate crisis is perfect for listeners of Rutger Bregman and Yuval Noah Harari.

We can survive the climate crisis. This book tells us how.

Practical, optimistic and empowering, The Future We Choose is a book for every generation, for all of us who feel powerless in the face of the climate crisis.

We have two choices for our future, which is still unwritten. It will be shaped by who we choose to be right now. So, how can we change the story of the world?

The Future We Choose is a passionate call to arms from former UN Executive Secretary for Climate Change, Christiana Figueres, and Tom Rivett-Carnac, senior political strategist for the Paris Agreement. We are still able to stave off the worst and manage the long-term effects of climate change, but we have to act now. We know what we need to do, and we have everything we need to do it.

This is the final hour: it can be our finest.

But we must act now.

Shallow and stupid propaganda piece

Progressive propaganda piece. Devoid of any depth or complexity. Doesn’t address any serious issues or costs of the suggested course of action. Factually mistaken on several aspects, especially diet, health and the economy. Strangely cultish too, advocates for secular religion and mindfulness meditation. Would not recommend.

How to survive the climate crisis

There is a lot a scare mongering over climate change and many people, me included, are painfully aware of the issue but feel helpless to stop it.
This book by Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, Chistiana Figeures , daughter of former Costa Rica president Jose Figueres Ferrer; and Tom Rivett-Carmac from the UK who is descendent of former chairman of the East India company, Their geopolitical backgrounds could not be more different but they are galvanised in their opposition to the causes and the impacts of greenhouse gases and the resultant climate change that we have all witnessed over the past twenty years.
This book proves there is more to the climate crisis than Greta Thunberg and provides compelling evidence for anyone who has ever been in any doubt about whether this is real or not. The authors take the reader / listener to the cliff edge to demonstrate what could happen if the world does not adhere to the promises made in the Paris Agreement and then give practical and relevant advice via a 10 point plan as to how we can all do our bit to protect the planet from overheating. This is a survival guide that we should all read.

This eloquent book stands as an inspiration for all of us - listen to it now

Christiana and Tom have written and performed an articulate compelling story. I really appreciated the complimentary counterpoise between their two voices, keeping the prose moving at pace. It graphically illustrates two alternating credible future scenarios outlining the consequences of continuing our lives unchanged or humanity collectively learning from our mistakes and changing the way we think and act. The well researched fluent narrative has fluidity and pace. Concluding with a comprehensive grounded achievable action plan that all of us can engage with. An excellent book which I would highly recommend.

Good information, but solutions are weak

The authors are very passionate and enthusiastic, which is great. However, in my opinion, the solutions for how we will achieve REAL change are not pushed enough. Whilst we all need to become educated towards creating a better environment for all, individuals or even groups of people are not able to compete with the damage that the huge corporations are doing, making it very difficult to have any impact at all. Whilst the authors have done a great job in convincing all of the nations to think about climate change in the Paris Agreement, it seems that this agreement is only a mere promise that 'we will do more', where each nation decides their own goals, rather than having any ambitious targets. Would love to see more development happening within the huge corporations, rather than trying to convince people that 'turning off your lightbulb' will have a major impact.

In conclusion, love that people are trying to do something positive towards climate change, just think we are pushing in the wrong direction relying on individual passion and protests to achieve a goal, rather than targeting the corporations.

Liberal Delusion

Centres around the liberal delusion that capitalism can solve the climate crisis rather than being the biggest obstacle to doing so. The book is informative in parts but trips over itself in order to not mention the word socialism when talking about regeneration and cooperation.

This book is morally bankrupt

I was looking for some details to understand why the climate emergency is so important.
It does not address the key arguments why investing in inefficient costly climate action ( just ask anybody who has to loose weight in a short time period) and thereby making energy costlier is more important than increasing developing countries gdp and route out of poverty with cheaper energy. This book is morally bankrupt as the end game of its argument ( with high energy costs) keeps the poor - poor forever.

A positive and inspiring book

A great book that first highlights two possible futures humanity faces - one where climate change runs its course and one where people take action to stop it. It then highlights how to get to that second possible future. A clear and inspiring book that lists simple steps we can all take to not only save the planet, but to make everything better for everyone.
