Summary

ITW Thriller Award winner

International Book Awards winner

Nina can never forgive Maggie for what she did. And she can never let her leave.

They say every house has its secrets, and the house that Maggie and Nina have shared for so long is no different. Except that these secrets are not buried in the past.

Every other night, Maggie and Nina have dinner together. When they are finished, Nina helps Maggie back to her room in the attic, and into the heavy chain that keeps her there. Because Maggie has done things to Nina that can’t ever be forgiven, and now she is paying the price.

But there are many things about the past that Nina doesn’t know, and Maggie is going to keep it that way - even if it kills her.

Because in this house, the truth is more dangerous than lies.

"An excellent psychological thriller. A one-sitting read about a daughter who keeps her mother locked in the attic. Twisty, moving, and chilling." --Sarah Pinborough, bestselling author of Behind Her Eyes

Can’t finish it

I might come back to it at some later date but oh boy it is grim.
Got about 2 hours from the end and couldn’t stand the darkness anymore.
If you want to read about somebody held captive in a room during lockdown...then go ahead, but it’s very depressing, even without lockdown it’s too much. The worst possible things that can happen to a person goes on here. Don’t think it will be a very happy ending either.
Just going to read something about birds singing and spring now or take an anti depressant. Wish I hadn’t wasted a credit on it.

A great story and easy to follow.. but...

I love John Marrs's books and I've listened to all of them, my absolute favourite being The One which is easily on list of top 5 audiobooks. I don't wish to be unkind and I hope this comes across as constructive criticism, but Elizabeth Knowledon's reading really irritates me. She has a lovely voice, carries the story well, but her habit of being over dramatic in each sentence really throws it off. In a perfectly ordinary sentence she puts such dramatic emphasis on certain words and it bugs the hell out of me. like on a comedy show if someone is reading a dramatic poem and it just sounds wrong. Maggie WALKED up the DARK steps WONDERING if she should SAY something. Every single sentence. Admittedly, she did stop doing this around half way through the book so maybe one of the producers asked her to tone it down. Other than that, shes a brilliant narrator, and the narrator of a book is such a huge part of the experience- I almost returned the book but I'm glad I didn't because it did get much better.

The story is brilliant, John Marrs is brilliant at bringing each interwoven story together with characters you couldn't put together until he reveals why, and how.

It's a great book and done really well if you can ignore the dramatics in the first half, again I'm not trying to be unkind about the narrator, she really has a lovely voice and reads beautifully, it's just a habit I can't ignore.

Chubby Checker would be pleased...

... by the twisted journey this book takes you on. I know John Marrs previous books have led us through Twistville and this one is no different. However, this one differs in that the story changes how you feel about the lead characters to such a point you just don't know what they are capable of next. The deceptive story climbs and climbs until you think you've reached the peak, only to find another, final twist (have I said twist enough?).
I only have praise for this tale. Written from the perspective of our leads, John at times leaves us heart wrenching for their plight, and at times wondering what despicable act will come next. Very clever, wickedly dark and at times shock inducing.
As this is Audible, I should mention the narrator. She has done a fantastic job, nailing the tone of the characters and adding to the sense that all is not right with them.

Overall, if you hadn't guessed, I loved this. Top drawer thriller from an elite writer. He must have a cold alter ego! Just joking, John!

OMG - THAT OLD LADY VOICE ... ABANDON BOOK!

Love some of John Marrs books - adore Elizabeth Knowelden but oh dearie dear dear dear that old lady character voice made me abandon this book in seconds - nails on a blackboard - I could not stand to listen any longer - maybe one for me to read rather than listen to. What a shame.

A Survivor's Review

There are a lot of ways in which a person can be abused, or abusive. Having personally escaped a similar "locked room" abusive situation, I was intrigued to see how well the author would approach the subject. Very quickly the locked room aspect became the least of the abuses taking place and I found my sympathies shifting and changing, developing as the story itself developed.

I rarely leave reviews for books, if somebody has managed to write a novel, publish it and make a living at it, they don't need me to tell them they are doing well. In this case, I felt moved so powerfully, I had to say something. The reality of being imprisoned by somebody who claims to love you is something rarely experienced (though it does happen). Having "been there, done that", I'm in the perfect position to review Marrs' depiction of the situation. Has he done a good job? Oh yes! Of course, there are things which he hasn't included but since the captivity is the backbone of the story, it needed to be painted with broad strokes, which it was, with only a few close up details. The use of a bucket, instead of a toilet, being one such element, though in this case, it is frequently cleaned.
My only negative comment, with regard to the captivity, is that I felt it didn't fully capture the despair inherent in the situation. It may be that I am somewhat innured to that sort of situation but it seemed that the only reaction against the captivity was physical violence, there didn't appear to be much emotional or mental reaction.

Taking everything together, and after some time to consider, I would definitely recommend this book. There weren't any massive surprises (though there were a couple of "tail kinks", not quite twists but definitely bends) but the development of the story was sufficiently convoluted, that I was held riveted until the end. Just bear in mind, as you read it, that the captive character is only sharing a few of her feelings about that imprisonment.

The best book of the year!!

I have read a previous book this author passengers, which I also found an excellent read. This book though has to be the best book of 2020 so far so full of twists and turns so many well-defined characters the narration is absolutely superb and the definition between the voices is excellent, throughout the book you care about the characters even as the book becomes darker and darker and darker. I find myself not being able to stop listening while still trying to figure what was going to happen next.

This book keeps you guessing right until the very last page and the twists that happen throughout this book are not predictable and you do not see them coming and when they happen they hit you like a freight train which in turn encourages you to push forward just one more chapter and then another and then another and the next thing you know it's 2 AM and you have work in the morning!!

What I also liked about this book is that both characters deliver moral dilemmas and you yourself are torn for both the main characters fates and circumstances. If you have never read any of John Marrs books before Please do You won't be disappointed!! It will have you on the edge of your seat right until the last chapter and each twist will have you reeling in disbelief! I love this book and it will take me a while to recover…

Ever changing

In this original, sometimes difficult to believe, yet always entertaining story, a love love-hate relationship between mother and daughter leaves the reader to question who the baddy is. A series of horrors opens up and one can’t help wondering who is worse?

Nicely read
