Used to looking at World War 2 through the lens of British and American perspectives, this book takes a radically different view of the war. Regarded by some academics as a bit of a polemic, it is, nevertheless, extremely useful in bringing some little understood areas of the war to light. In particular, the length to which Stalin went to exploit Lend Lease with the full connivance of Roosevelt and Harry Hopkins will leave the reader slack jawed. In addition, Roosevelt's complete failure to even exert the minimal leverage on Stalin with regards to the Japanese is equally perplexing. As is the selling out of Chiang Kai Shek - China being traditionally seen as a Roosevelt pet project. While the book does an admirable job of describing Stalin's motivations, for me, it's the reevaluation of Roosevelt's contribution to the Allies that is the most interesting part. I've given it 5 stars, but it is definitely worth reading some of the criticisms of this book before you wade in

A Very Different Perspective

reads more like a very enthusiastic PhD submission written by a fan of the McArthur witch hunts. Focuses very much on the US Soviet relationship between the wars. Little to no real attempt to give any depth to British French and other nations relationships with the Soviet Union. he does look at Communist Chinese influences and Japanese Manchurian war.

Good idea for a topic just the author needs to give credence to and more detail about the world outside the USA and Pacific sphere by including its complex influences and interactions. At times it seems to be an attempt to write the UK and France and other European countries out of the history books.
