'Another historical thriller of mighty proportions' – The Times

A Time of Conflict
It is 997 CE, the end of the Dark Ages. The king’s grip on the country is fragile and chaos reigns. A young boat builder dreams of a better future after a devastating Viking raid shatters the life he hoped for.

Lives Intertwined
A Norman noblewoman follows her husband to a new land only to find her life there shockingly different; and a capable monk at Shiring Abbey has a vision of transforming his humble home into a centre of learning admired throughout Europe.

The Dawn of a New Age
Now, with England at the dawn of the Middle Ages, these three people will each come into dangerous conflict with a ruthless bishop, who will do anything to increase his wealth and power, in an epic tale of ambition, rivalry, love and hate.

Over three decades ago we were introduced to Kingsbridge in The Pillars of the Earth, and now in this masterful prequel international bestseller Ken Follett will take us on a journey into a rich past, which will end where his masterpiece begins.

Critic reviews

Another historical thriller of mighty proportions. A prequel, set in Dark Ages Britain, to his bestselling The Pillars of the Earth
An earthy barrage of page-turning incident
Plenty of action to keep the reader involved. This epic tale sets the foundation for the author's much-loved 1989 book, The Pillars of the Earth
An effortlessly engaging and entertaining read
One of the great bestselling novelists

This is so well written, however, I felt so stressed in parts because of the way people were treated, or how some behaved that I found it difficult to keep going! However......... I had to keep reading as I NEEDED to know the fate of the characters.

This is the sign of a brilliant author, I was living WITH the characters and was fully involved!

But..... So stressful! 😊

A brilliant tale

Enjoyed this so much more than the disappointing Column of Fire, the last of The Kingsbridge trilogy, it’s a worthy prequel and much more in the vein of Pillars of the Earth and Workd Without End.

Excellent

Follet has done a brilliant job, finding wonderfully complex and thrilling ways to establish the circumstances required for The Pillars of the Earth. The historical detail is rich without ever being heavy. The book is a joy. Why on earth they keep using this narrator I cannot imagine - Follett’s elegant sentences are regularly broken at nonsensical points, constant American English pronunciations are used (even the years are read wrongly) and yet again the west of England is mysteriously peopled by men with cockney accents! Glastonbury seems to be somewhere east of Bow... He’s clearly been reined in by a better producer than before, but it’s a travesty this glorious adventure wasn’t given to a more skilled narrator with a better grasp of UK English.

Superb prequel, so poorly narrated

I have listened to all of the Kingsbridge novels and would rate this nearly as highly as the first book.

Totally fantastic

Really enjoyed the story, the history and wonderful romance. Read well but the accents needed a bit of improvement. Would not deter me from listening to him again.

The best of Ken Follett
