Summary
This brand-new unabridged audiobook of The Fellowship of the Ring, the first part of J. R. R. Tolkien’s epic adventure, The Lord of the Rings, is read by the BAFTA award-winning actor, director and author Andy Serkis.
In a sleepy village in the Shire, a young hobbit is entrusted with an immense task. He must make a perilous journey across Middle-earth to the Cracks of Doom, there to destroy the Ruling Ring of Power - the only thing that prevents the Dark Lord Sauron’s evil dominion.
Thus begins J. R. R. Tolkien’s classic tale of adventure, which continues in The Two Towers and The Return of the King.
Critic reviews
"The English-speaking world is divided into those who have read The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit and those who are going to read them." (Sunday Times)
"A story magnificently told, with every kind of colour and movement and greatness." (New Statesman)
"Here are beauties which pierce like swords or burn like cold iron." (C. S. Lewis)
Featured article: Aragorn - a Lord of the Rings character guide
From his time as the ranger Strider to his ascension to King of Gondor, this guide has everything you need to know about the hero Aragorn. Perhaps one of the most mysterious and intriguing characters in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Aragorn is known by many names: Strider, Elessar, Estel, and finally Aragorn II, heir to the throne of Gondor and Arnor. From a shadowy tracker who mysteriously comes to Frodo's aid to an essential member of the Fellowship of the Ring to the long-awaited king who restores harmony and peace to Middle-earth, Aragorn plays many important roles in the fantasy epic. And he has quite an interesting history.

Brilliant!
Andy Serkis’ performance is absolutely magical. I’ve been waited for the new LotR audible series for so long and it worth every minute of it ☺️

Fantastic!
Read by Gollum himself, masterful use of all the different voices, and the story is timeless

Outstanding Performance by Andy Serkis
Andy Serkis makes this fabulous book even more alive! He manages to enhance images of each character and their travels from your own imagination due to his pure depth of talent. His focus is on the audience and the amount of energy he delivers must leave him feeling exhausted. He expertly manages the personality and voices of all characters which results in a visual concept that leaves you feeling that you are a 9th member of the travelling party! As for Gollum Andy Spears of course brought the fullness of this evil, tormented character alive.
I have read negative comment about it being to long! But isn’t that Lord of the Rings and surely if it wasn’t is could never be so amazingly wonderful.

Fantastic
Andy Serkis is incredible - love the gentle homage to the actors’ voices from the films - a Scottish Pippin, a northern Boromir- the hours literally fire by.

Excellent
From the somewhat mixed reviews I went into listening to this with anticipation. I was greatly relieved to find Andy Serkis is an excellent narrator. All the characters have distinct voices and accents, the story is read with great enthusiasm. I felt like I was really on the journey with Frodo and his companions. I am looking forward to listening to the rest of the trilogy.

a timeless story wonderfully executed
Andy Serkis' reading is every bit as wonderful as you'd expect from somebody who has become so embedded in the world of Tolkien over the last 20 years

Lord of the rings is a superb story and is wonderfully written but this narration is next level! The voices are amazing and brought to life the whole story. Really enjoyed this reading and will be getting the whole series by Serkis.

Wonderful. Can't wait for Andy to read the rest.
What can anyone say? It's the Lord of the Rings. Andy does a fantastic job, and I'm very much looking forward to him reading book two and three.

phenomenal
who knew the voice of gollum could be so pleasant to listen to? Andy Serkis is a fantastic narrator able to bring out the full wonder and dread of LotR. As for the story itself, I now understand why this series is reputed to have spawned an entire genre.
The entire setting, with the exception of the charming and whimsical Shire, oozes a profound aura of majesty and melancholy, as if the fate of all living things - and even some non-living things - hangs in the balance.
if you've already seen the film and are debating whether or not to get the book, go for it.
