Time travel meets history in this new drama adaptation by Marty Ross. When Max, a recent ancient history graduate, is offered a mysterious job at St Mary's Historical Research Institute, she quickly comes to realise this isn't any old stuffy research library. At St Mary's the historians don't just study the past - they revisit it. What begins as an academic exploration of events, such as the Peterloo Massacre, takes a dark and dangerous turn, and the historians of St Mary's soon learn that it's not just history they're fighting....

Behind the seemingly innocuous façade of St Mary's, a different kind of historical research is taking place. They don't do 'time-travel' - they 'investigate major historical events in contemporary time'. Maintaining the appearance of harmless eccentrics is not always within their power - especially given their propensity for causing loud explosions when things get too quiet. Meet the disaster-magnets of St Mary's Institute of Historical Research as they ricochet around History.

So I'm a bit late to the whole St Mary's Chronicles scene, but boy am I glad I have arrived, finally!!

Seen this title (and all the other books in the series) many many many times whilst perusing Audible, mainly once I had listened to all the books from my favourite (at that time) authors, plus looked at deals and had run out of 'must listen to books'.
I listen to Audible books all the time, apart from when working or sleeping, gave up on listening to music (which I did whilst doing housework, gardening or crafts) it became so boring and repetitive, tried podcasts, discovered Audible and no going back!

Anyway back to JODTAA, as I said, I saw it many times, read the blurb, many times, read the reviews also many times, thought it must be a good listen because there are so many of them......
But I was put off because so many reviews said it was a great British romp, or great British chaps with cups of tea thrown in (I now understand the cups of tea and must point out I am British) which to me sounded so pompous, how could it be a fun, exciting listen if it were so pompous?!? Did I want to 'waste' a credit on this book and an author I had never read? Stupidly I thought I did not!
Saw it again on Audible's 12 days of Christmas deals and thought I'd buy it, worse comes to worse I could return it, after all it wasn't a lot of money to waste and it wasn’t a credit, also got a few of the short stories simply just because they were free.

Started listening....And WOW! What a BRILLIANT story! Heard a couple of chapters, wasn't really what I was expecting at all, got very excited, starting telling my husband all about it, turns out he has this title on his Kindle and has had for quite some time, unread, and now he wants to read it so I can't tell him any more! Can’t spoil the surprise for him, but also can’t let out all my excitement either, I need to find more people I can tell!
I got so excited by the unfolding events (and there are many to keep you hooked) I decided I 'needed' book 2, used a credit for this then bought 3 more credits, then another 3 and ended up buying ALL The Chronicles of St Mary's, including the short stories!!!! I have never been so frivolous/extravagant/enthusiastic/crazy about an author (known or otherwise) before in my life!! Turns out it wasn’t at all pompous!
While I was at it I also purchased The Nothing Girl and Little Donkey too.

The story, characters, events and escapades, a brilliant bunch of historians who just happen to travel through time, have just captivated and charmed me, I find myself wondering what's going to happen next when I'm not listening, and also while I am!
Superbly written, love the story and the pace, so much happening here, well and truly got me hooked in such a small amount of time, that has never happened to me before. Can't wait to find out what happens next and I have 90+ hours of listening to look forward to (or is it in the past?).

Excellent narration by Zara Ramm, she just brings the characters ALIVE as the story unfolds, almost as if you was there.
I sometimes find it hard to listen to a new narrator once a book is finished depending on their tone and accent, this was not the case at all with Zara.

Finally I can not recommend this book enough!! Take a chance, Just read it, you will not be disappointed!
Jodi Taylor also writes a blog about her book writing journey, history fact finding upcoming books and events, along with cups of tea and chocolate, which is very amusing and well worth checking out.

Such an AMAZING story!!! One of my all time favourites!
I’ve read so many times in the past, and now listening to it makes it seem so much more ‘real’.

I’m sad it’s over but it’s one of those stories I will listen to time and time again, no pun intended!
