'She throws her head back and pushes her chest forward and lets go a huge blast right into the centre of his body. The rivulets and streams of red scarring run across his chest and up around his throat. She'd put her hand on his heart and stopped him dead.' Suddenly - tomorrow or the day after - girls find that with a flick of their fingers, they can inflict agonizing pain and even death.

If your funny older sister were the former deputy chief of staff to President Barack Obama, her behind-the-scenes political memoir would sound something like this. Who Thought This Was a Good Idea? is an intimate and admiring portrait of a president, a candid book of advice for young women, and a promising debut from a savvy political star.

Warm, funny & very human.
I basically want Alyssa to be my new best friend because she manages to make one of the most stressful jobs in the word seem like an absolute privilege (which it is, I guess).
She's warm, funny as hell - all while being grounded & practical.
The book is lovely to listen to- like listening to a friend and it's filled with great stories about her time at the White House that make the very idea of working in government & politics seem attainable & positive instead of the usual political memoir filled with backstabbing manoeuvring.

The hilarious memoir from award-winning comedian Bridget Christie. When Bridget Christie walked into her local bookshop, she thought she'd come out with a book. And maybe a calendar of cute photos of cats (hopefully unlike you've just done). The last thing she thought she'd be leaving with was the need for a new wave of feminism and the start of an incredibly successful career.

I just loved this book-Bridget Christie is so smart and funny without an ounce of pomp or worthiness. It's a book I want to give to my daughter when she's older because every girl should have someone as warm and funny yo help her understand feminism and why it's not only still relevant but vital.

Them began as a book about different kinds of extremists, but after Jon had got to know some of them - Islamic fundamentalists, neo-Nazis, Ku Klux Klansmen - he found that they had one oddly similar belief: that a tiny, shadowy elite rule the world from a secret room. In Them, Jon sets out, with the help of the extremists, to locate that room. The journey is as creepy as it is comic, and along the way Jon is chased by men in dark glasses, unmasked as a Jew in the middle of a Jihad training camp, and more.

In the late 1980s Jon Ronson was the keyboard player in the Frank Sidebottom Oh Blimey Big Band. Frank wore a big fake head. Nobody outside his inner circle knew his true identity. This became the subject of feverish speculation during his zenith years. Together, they rode relatively high. Then it all went wrong. Twenty-five years later and Jon has co-written a movie, Frank, inspired by his time in this great and bizarre band. Frank is set for release in 2014, starring Michael Fassbender, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Domhnall Gleeson and directed by Lenny Abrahamson.

Once in a generation a woman comes along who changes everything. Tina Fey is not that woman, but she met that woman once and acted weird around her.

Before 30 Rock, Mean Girls, and 'Sarah Palin', Tina Fey was just a young girl with a dream: a recurring stress dream that she was being chased through a local airport by her middle-school gym teacher. She also had a dream that one day she would be a comedian on TV. She has seen both these dreams come true.

Yes-Tina fey is the super smart, funny friend you wish you had in real life. she discusses feminist subjects in a warm, insightful way. It's easy listening that has some meat to. Tina Fey has written something in the same vein as How To Be A Woman by Caitlin Moran. It's an upliftng book that brightened up my weekday November commute no end.

What made the experience of listening to Gone Girl the most enjoyable?

I loved this book - it's one of those really enjoyable thrillers where the twists are so good they make you grin with pleasure. The audio version is fantastic - the two narrators give such depth and characterization that I felt like they really were Nick and Amy.

What other book might you compare Gone Girl to, and why?

This book was a bit hit and miss for me. There are some great ideas for how to reduce your work load and work more efficiently, thus theortically reduce your working time. It's only really applicable for running your own business though and even then, the title is completely misleading because even Tim Ferris quite obviously works WAY more than 4 hours per week. However, there are some useful efficiency tips and it certainly helped me to think about work/business in a new way.

Each day we face a barrage of images and messages from society and the media telling us who, what, and how we should be. We are led to believe that if we could only look perfect and lead perfect lives, we'd no longer feel inadequate. So most of us perform, please, and perfect, all the while thinking, What if I can't keep all of these balls in the air? Why isn't everyone else working harder and living up to my expectations? What will people think if I fail or give up? When can I stop proving myself?

This book's practical in it's focus - lots of tools and ideas to help improve your ability to live a more 'whole hearted' life. The only disappointment is that Brene Brown doesn't narrate it.

I've had an interest in meditation and buddhism for a while but have been put off many programmes because they seem at bit too woo woo.

I wanted something practical, instructional, yet warm and enjoyable. Jack Kornfield pulls off all 3 here.

His voice is great - and I was able to get into the meditations really easily.
