I read this many years ago and was delighted to find it on Audible especially read be Derek Jackobi.
it's a unique detective story. the few characters are written with humour and are more than just the one dimensional background or plot device. the story is engaging and so interesting even for those who dont enjoy history. how I wish she had debunked other chunks of our past to allow us to re-evaluate our villains and heros.

I really like Jo Spain's writing but I struggled with this one probably as I could not like any of the characters. a good story and well told but depressing.

I look forward to these stories so much. the familiar characters and the inter relationships are so skillfully written, I feel I know them. the plots are always cleverly thought out and even if one woman's connection to so many murders is unlikely who cares. just look at the work of the amazing Agatha Christie, it's easy to suspend reality for great characterization and good writing. if I want I can get realism in other books and realism is at times very overrated. all these characters are so well rounded and the complex relationships work. no introspective navel gazing, sanitized violence and a policeman who doesnt have a drink/drug/ aggression problem is very refreshing. thank you Elly Griffiths. hope you wont get tired of your characters. I'm sure I wont.

the reader was very good and it had a promising storyline with well rounded interesting characters. however it felt unfinished with a number of ends left in the air unresolved.
it left me feeling dissatisfied with the whole experience. the problem is so I risk trying another by the same author or is this how she always writes?

I really enjoy these stories and the reader suits them so well. The ongoing threads are cleverly woven. The murder plots may be a little stretched but realism is not essential I enjoy the way the relationships are handled. There is a warts and all feeling to the complicated threads in the lives of her characters which is refreshing. I enjoy watching their lives develop and look forward to the next book with pleasant anticipation.
