Jenny is the story of Jenny Winge, a talented Norwegian painter who lives a free and independent life in Rome. Betraying her own ideals, she has an affair, resulting in a child out of wedlock, and decides to raise the child on her own. Undset gives a gripping portrayal of a woman struggling towards fulfillment and independence, who at the same time wrestles with mental problems. It is written with unflinching honesty, which makes her story as compelling today as it was nearly a century ago.

I am forcing myself through to the end but this book so far (on part two now) is all a bit dreary. Sadly, although this may just be me, I also find the reader’s accent distracting and not in a good way. Sorry

I am sorry. I really tried to enjoy this book but the actress reading it over dramatises with her fear filled shaky voice so much that I lost all empathy with the protagonist and her sister. I wanted the character to pull herself together after all she is a physicist

Having used the full Pimsleur course to get accustomed to Norwegian, I used this as a revision exercise. It is useful and you will be able to pick up working phrases. However, it is a bit like being taught by a patronisingly bossy Joyce Grenfell at times.

Having worked through all of the Pimsleur Norwegian course I intended to use this for revision. Two young men who seem very pleased with themselves and their lame attempts at humour proceed (after some unusual intro music) to waffle on and on in English. You will be lucky to learn a sentence of Norwegian in each section but you will learn a lot about how clever and ‘right on’ the narrators are.

Merricat has developed an idiosyncratic system of rules and protective magic to guard the estate against intrusions from hostile villagers. But one day a stranger arrives—cousin Charles, with his eye on the Blackwood fortune.
