The Voice Of Lennon?

I greatly admire this writer. I came to this (his 2nd novel) after City Of Bohane (his 1st) and Night Boat To Tangier (his 3rd). I loved them both.
Beatlebone is ambitious, it's central character is John Lennon. I have preconceptions, will this inhibit my enjoyment? The plot seems implausible, no bad thing necessarily, if Lennon's voice rings true it should fly alright. As Barry states in the novel '... if we can get the voices right, the fiction might hold for a while at least.' To my ears the character's voice constantly jars, only occasionally sounding authentic:-

Do you have a reservation? she says
I have severe ones, he says, but I do need a room.

For an instant the deadpan, acid sarcasm strikes a true note and I believe. but such moments are too few and far between, belief fails, the fiction doesn't hold.

Well read with good production values but an abridged version is a diminished version. Stars docked for this reason.
