Immensely enjoyed listening to this. Well narrated and Christopher Timothy brings it all to life beautifully. I read the books many years ago and I loved the TV series. Highly recommended.

I think Peter May is one of the brilliant novelists of our time. This 4th of the China series is set in the USA but still with the two main characters. When May writes about a place you are transported to the place and almost feel what it is like to be there. The narration is superb once again by the wonderful Peter Forbes. The story is fast moving and so well researched as always with his books. One learns about something every time with Peter May.

Loved listening to this. The story has several twists and turns and of course makes one chuckle all the while. Robert Harry’s narration is brilliant- so effortless. Shame more narrators don’t learn from people like him.

Over the years I have read or listened several times. This is a timeless book loosely based on the life of Gauguin. The construction and language makes it a book you can go back to many times and still discover something new in its pages. Although I have enjoyed it very much in print, this audio version is the one I return to because Robert Hardy’s narration is so compelling and brilliant, it brings another dimension altogether. Don’t miss out on this.

I love this series and although I enjoyed the story it was not as good a plot as Peter Robinson usually produces. There were no real surprises and it was all rather predictable. Having so much set in Estonia, all the dialogue by Estoniens sounded the same. Sadly a bit flat.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The narrator, he is hopeless at dialogue. Everyone sounds so ponderous when they are speaking and he obviously has not bothered any research as Annie and Banks are not from yorkshire and should not have Yorkshire accents. Very annoying and the narration generally is awful.

What other book might you compare Friend of the Devil to, and why?

Dont know

Would you be willing to try another one of Richard Burnip’s performances?

Definitely not.

Did Friend of the Devil inspire you to do anything?

No

Any additional comments?

Love Peter Robinson's books. Such a shame no decent narrator

Loved the story. Read the book years ago and decided to listen. Shame thé narrator felt the need to give every sentence an exclamation mark. He should get lessons in narration.

I have listened to all the Harry Hole series in order and each one is a bit better than the last. Sean Barret is an excellent narrator and Harry Hole is now almost as dear to me as Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch. Enjoyed this book immensely and am hoping there are more to come

Love Joe Nesbo, love Harry Hole and love Sean Barrett's narration. The only very minor criticism is that I would like a slight pause in changes of scene, sometimes the production guys have run them into each other. But 5 stars all over and on to the next book.
