The Locked Ward is an extraordinary memoir that sets out to reveal the true story of life in a psychiatric ward - the fear, the violence and despair, and also the care and the compassion. Recounting the stories of the patients he worked with, and those of the friends he made on the ward, O'Donnell provides a detailed account of day-to-day life behind the doors of the most feared and stigmatised environment in healthcare.

A jaw-dropping account of life as a prison officer in one of the country's most notorious jails. Neil ‘Sam’ Samworth spent 11 years working as a prison officer in HMP Manchester, aka Strangeways. A tough Yorkshireman with a soft heart, Sam had to deal with it all - gangsters and gangbangers, terrorists and psychopaths, addicts and the mentally ill. Men who should not be locked up and men who should never be let out. Strangeways is a shocking and at times darkly funny account of life in a high-security prison.

From the start to finish I was totally engrossed, this is a hard hitting story narrated brilliantly and expertly written. I thoroughly enjoyed this book honest, shocking and totally unbelievable in parts that this IS going on in our prisons. This man deserves upmost respect and I would love to meet him and shake his hand. I hope he goes on to have a very happy life with his family and leaves all that madness behind him but is an excellent advocate for change the government need to be taking notice of people like this normal hard working people on the front line !!! It was an honor to read and hope this encourages people to read as it really is brilliant.

This is the age of addiction, a condition so epidemic, so all encompassing and ubiquitous, that unless you are fortunate enough to be an extreme case, you probably don't know that you have it. What unhealthy habits and attachments are holding your life together? Are you unconsciously dependent on food? Bad relationships? A job that doesn't fulfill you? Numb, constant perusal of your phone, looking for what? My qualification for writing this book is not that I am better than you, it's that I am worse.
