If I could give this book ten stars then I would but sadly I’m limited to five.
Having just listened to it over the last two days, I’m left feeling truly humbled by the bravery and sheer tenacity of all of the truly outstanding people that fought for our freedom in the second world war, including those of different nations.
This book is outstanding in every way from start to finish and excellently read.
I thoroughly recommend it

Sadly, Stephen Leather changed the narrator for the 2nd and 3rd in this series and absolutely ruined it! The Chinaman narrated by Russell Boulter was superb, complete with great accents for both male and female. However Martyn Read's narration is so dreadful and completely takes you away from the story!

I have well over 1000 audiobooks in my collection and know only too well how poor narration can ruin a book for the listener.

I shall return this book as unlistenable because of Martyn Read's narration.

Yet another outstanding book from Mick Herron!!!

For all of those who love Jackson Lamb and his band of misfits, this book will not disappoint. Ten hours and forty-six minutes of pure escapism into the world of Slough House, read by Sean Barrett....who could ask for more?!

Whiney character narration ruined it.

I have so far listened to all the Peter James books narrated by Daniel Weyman and enjoyed them so thought I would give David Bauckham a try...I wish I hadn't bothered. His characters are portrayed as either grumpy or whiney. Conversations between Caitlyn and her mother are unbearable to listen to, so much so I found myself fast forwarding until the book had moved on.
It's such a shame, as the story would be great if read by Daniel Weyman.
Will return it today

Buyer BEWARE...the narrator is DREADFUL!!!

I have nearly all of Peter James' audio books in my library so I thought I would get the Roy Grace series from book 1....I shall be returning this one.

The narrator, Tim Bruce, reads the book so badly that I find myself skipping through the more extreme parts where he completely "over acts" the book in the most ridiculous fashion. I'm astonished that anyone can find his performance acceptable. Tim Bruce reduces this book to the auditory equivalent of listening to fingernails scraping down a very large blackboard. RETURN!

Absolutely excellent!

What disappointed you about Strong Poison?

I can't remember why I purchased this book...perhaps buy one get one free, but I started listening to it the other day.
Now whilst I understand, this book is set in a time when language was completely different to that that is used today, this book, given there is a lot of non essential chatter in, has begun to grate. So much so that I cannot waste any more time listening to it.
I'm now into chapter 12 of 24 and have decided to return it for a refund.

What was most disappointing about Dorothy L. Sayers’s story?

It was sooooooooo incredibly slow! 12 chapters in and I'm not engaged with any of the characters at all which is a shame.

What about Jane McDowell’s performance did you like?

I think she gave it a good shot, but this book would defy even Sean Barrett to bringing it to life!

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Not really. I shan't be buying another book by this author.

Any additional comments?

All I can say is thank goodness for Audible's great listening guarantee!

It's not often I feel the need to write a review, but this is one of them. The story is great on every level, however it's ruined by the reader. He has a voice that could be (in terms of a colour ) described as beige.
His pronunciation of some words caused me to replay the word to see if I'd actually heard correctly!
His Mexican accent is definitely Irish!
And the editor for this performance must have had the week off as there were so many times when the same line was repeated.
All in all, the book was good enough for me to want to listen to the end, but I certainly would avoid any other books narrated by this reader!

Listening to the first 4 chapters I found it difficult to differentiate between the voices of all the character...they all melded into one unfortunately. So I shall now return it and find another Jeffery Deaver by a different narrator entirely. Jeff Harding is great reading the first two.
