I found the plot hugely disappointing. Without wishing to ruin it for anyone about to read it, there was one part that was so unbelievable that it felt like it came from a different novel.

A short while into listening to this book I toyed with the idea of abandoning it. It just wasn't holding me. Then it became clear there was a secret and although I guessed what this was really early on, I stayed with it just to find out if I was right.

My main issue with the book was that I didn't care about any of the characters. None of them. I had no sympathy with any of them and wouldn't have minded any of them being killed of at any time. I also found the coldness of all 3 female characters unbelievable.

By way of aside the narrator really struggled with any attempt at an American accent.

Without at least one character to interest me, I found this a bland listen that I was pleased to reach the end of.

How refreshing to find a book that isn't a psychological thriller! When I started listening to this, I wasn't sure it was going to be my cup of tea, but within minutes I was hooked. When I say that Elaine Everest is like Enid Blyton for adults then I mean this is a really good way!

The story wrapped itself around me like a comfort blanket and had me walking around and smiling to myself. I was disappointed when it ended but pleased to learn that there are other Elaine Everest books I can listen to.

Highly recommend.

What made the experience of listening to The Heart's Invisible Furies the most enjoyable?

The superb narration enhances an already superb story. Beautifully written, and beautifully read. I would look for other books narrated by Stephen Hogan.

Anna Friel absolutely ruins it!

What would have made The Perfect Girlfriend better?

I was distracted from a basically sound story by Anna Friel's simply dreadful narration. She mis-pronounced words and she sounded as though she had a cold throughout. Friel left pauses between words in sentences that just shouldn't have been there and I was really put off by her constant swallowing noises and pronunciation. I couldn't wait to get to the end for all the wrong reasons. Whoever decided to use Friel as narrator has done the author Karen Hamilton a huge disservice. I would honestly avoid any other book read by Friel. Her voice was awful!
