Wonderful writing, beautifully realised cultures, characters to love and hate and a highly entertaining narrator. Thoughtful, thought provoking and funny.

From the Audie-nominated narrator of The Martian. In eleven years time, a million members of an alien race will arrive at Earth. Years before they enter orbit, their approach will be announced by the flare of a thousand flames in the sky, their ships' huge engines burning hard to slow them from the vast speeds needed to cross interstellar space. These foreboding lights will shine in our night sky like new stars, getting ever brighter until they outshine even the sun, casting ominous shadows and banishing the night until they suddenly blink out.

I really couldn’t decide at first if this was a bad book or a terrible narrator and decided in the end it was both. The guy who is reading sounds like a male version of Marge Simpson and once I had that image in my head, I could only visualise every character as a variation on Marge. That said, there was not much for him to work with. The writing is riddled with cliche, the characters are clunky stereotypes and the plot is derivative and dull. I am sorry that I wasted money on this pulp.
