Loved this. A story that really benefited from audio format. Wide ranging with huge appeal I cried at the end partly for the emotional conclusion mostly because it was over.

Story
Tara Westover and her family grew up preparing for the End of Days but, according to the government, she didn’t exist. She hadn’t been registered for a birth certificate. She had no school records because she’d never set foot in a classroom, and no medical records because her father didn’t believe in hospitals. As she grew older, her father became more radical and her brother more violent. At 16, Tara knew she had to leave home. In doing so she discovered both the transformative power of education, and the price she had to pay for it.

Story
Twenty years ago Helen Franklin did something she cannot forgive herself for, and she has spent every day since barricading herself against its memory. But her sheltered life is about to change. A strange manuscript has come into her possession. It is filled with testimonies from the darkest chapters of human history, which all record sightings of a tall, silent woman in black, with unblinking eyes and bleeding feet: Melmoth, the loneliest being in the world. Condemned to walk the Earth forever, she tries to beguile the guilty and lure them away for a lifetime wandering alongside her.

Too long, too much myth
Reviewed: 17-02-19
Well read but way too long and I only listened to the end for resolution of the ‘plot ‘ far too much myth and legend tied up in it which I really struggled with. I liked the interwoven stories but not the device that linked them. Nowhere as good as the Essex Serpent

Story
In her memoir, a work of deep reflection and mesmerizing storytelling, Michelle Obama invites listeners into her world, chronicling the experiences that have shaped her - from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work to her time spent at the world's most famous address. With unerring honesty and lively wit, she describes her triumphs and her disappointments, both public and private, telling her full story as she has lived it - in her own words and on her own terms.

Well written, well read, perfect listen

Beautifully read, works really well as a listening book. Her early life interesting. She has the ability to make readers/ listeners feel they are privy to her inner thoughts. She writes candidly with fluidity. Even the later chapters describing some well documented episodes have the benefit of an insiders description. She doesn’t demean herself by criticising people with the exception of Donald Trump. She retains her dignity and demeanour but still manages to make it sound like she would be a fun person to meet and hang out with.
