January 1937. Jack Miller has just about run out of options. His shoes have worn through, he can't afford to heat his rented room in Tooting, and he longs to use his training as an specialist wireless operator instead of working in his dead-end job. When he is given the chance to join an arctic expedition, as communications expert, by a group of elite Oxbridge graduates, he brushes off his apprehensions and convinces himself to join them.

This was a lugubrious tale somewhat in the tradition of an nineteenth century classic thriller. Set in Greenland, it tells of a group of scientists thrown together on a lonely maritime outpost and of an unpleasant mystery which unfolds during their time there. Although it is a while since I heard this book, thinking of it now sends a tingle up my spine as the sinister atmosphere of this claustrophobic tale really got under my skin. This was despite having listened to it on a coach packed full of year 10 students as we travelled to France on a school trip!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would feel happy to recommend this to someone who was struggling to tidy and organise their living space.

Would you ever listen to anything by Andrew J. Mellen again?

Possibly, because I enjoyed the way he presented what could have been a dreary topic, but he inspired and entertained me.

What does Andrew J. Mellen bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

This is not a story, but he has a jaunty delivery of his own material which is somehow soothing and reassuring. He makes the listener feel that what he is suggesting might actually be possible, and if you listen to sections a few times over, as I did, you begin to internalise some of his phrases so that you can apply them to your lifestyle.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Some parts made me smile. "Your grandfather's hat is not your grandfather."

Any additional comments?

Once you get the general drift you may not need to listen to the whole book. However, Mellen takes you methodically through the whole house so by the end you should have everything neat and tidy! If you have a partner I suggest you get them to listen to it too, otherwise you will be fighting a losing battle against their untidy habits.

As a child growing up in a family of cantadoras (keepers of the old stories) Clarissa Pinkola Estes learned first hand how a stroy told at bedtime can soothe away the troubles of the day and prepare the way for another night's dreams to follow. Now a beloved cantadora herself, Estes shares this treasured family tradition with you on Bedtime Stories, her own special collection of tales to relax and ease you to sleep.

If you could sum up Bedtime Stories in three words, what would they be?

Goodnight, sleep tight!

What other book might you compare Bedtime Stories to, and why?

The Creative Fire by the same author, otherwise this audiobook is quite unique.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

I love the way Clarissa Pinkola Estes retells familiar tales so that they sound fresh and new.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Well, it's just not that kind of book, it's designed to sooth you off to sleep, so it would be something like, "You won't stay awake long enough to see the ending."!

Any additional comments?

CPEstes has such a lovely voice and she lulls you into a dreamy state in which her reading works on a subconscious level. The only thing that spoils it is the corporate man's voice that wakes you up at the end saying, "Thank you for listening to Audible." Perhaps Audible could consider leaving this off their products designed to induce sleep.

In a snow-covered morning in upstate New York, a girl out riding her horse is hit by a 40-ton truck. Though horribly injured, both 13-year-old Grace and her horse Pilgrim survive. Annie, Grace's mother, refuses to have Pilgrim destroyed and hears about a man in Montana, a 'whisperer' who is said to have the gift of healing troubled horses. They set off across the continent to find him and there, under the massive Montana sky, all their lives are changed forever.

If you could sum up The Horse Whisperer in three words, what would they be?

Horse gets better.

What did you like best about this story?

Combination of human/animal narrative and atmospheric Wild West setting.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

I loved the description of the night out under the stars on the cattle drive.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I have not quite finished listening to it yet, but the scene in which Grace has her first ride on horseback was touching, however, I think there may be a weepy scene ahead!

Any additional comments?

Beautifully read, and I now have a small crush on Tom Booker as a result of the lovely characterisation by the narrator, William Dufris.
