It’s been a long while for me since I stumbled up a sci-fi concept epic grand enough to capture my imagination; retaining Some solid scientific ideas at its core. Often the line between sci-fi and Tolkien-like fantasy becomes blurred... not here. It good, pure contemporary sci-fi! Planets, stars, aliens, FTL communications, replicators and all!

I am an hour into this book and literally have pulled my headphones out. If I hear "he said" "she said" "he said" "he said" "she said" one more time I will freak out. This is the single worst piece of literature I have come across.

Okay, this 3 star rating is from a total Banks fan who usually gives 5 stars without batting an eyelid. Still enjoyable with some fascinatingly huge Banks-style concepts. I just found the flow a little broken in this novel and I just couldn't get a grasp on the characters.

The finest Culture novel yet!

Over many years I've keenly tracks Banks' development in his wild and wonderful Culture universe. I couldn't put this one down - a work of sheer SciFi genius! Detailed yet expansive, bizarre yet familiar. Philosophy, war, religion, technology, physics, dream. More please Iain! Also masterfully narrated by Peter Kenny across a galaxy of different characters.

This is a truly wonderful story and I have thoroughly enjoyed the journey through all three books. I wanted to use this little post to say that Saul Reichlin, the narrator of all three of the Stieg Larsson novels, is undoubtedly the finest narrator I have come across in my journey through countless audiobooks. From now on, I am as much a follower of Mr Reichlin as I am of any author. Thanks Saul - you're a wizard of spoken word, characterisation and ambiance!
