This is the story of Elizabeth I's inner circle and the crucial human relationships which lay at the heart of her personal and political life. Using a wide range of original sources - including private letters, portraits, verse, drama, and state papers - Susan Doran provides a vivid and often dramatic account of political life in Elizabethan England and the queen at its center.

What did you like most about Elizabeth I and Her Circle?

Interesting history, well written, but I think I will buy the hard copy as the narrator put me to sleep!

A burned corpse is a disturbing mystery for Beijing detective Li Yan until he enlists forensic pathologist Margaret Campbell. Having abandoned a broken life in Chicago for her work, she's as determined as Li to ask difficult questions about the man's death. But some questions have answers they'd rather not hear - facts that others are desperate to conceal. The Firemaker is the first in the acclaimed China series from Peter May, author of Runaway, Entry Island and the internationally best-selling Lewis Trilogy.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Get Dr Margaret Campbell to buck her ideas up! I really can't imagine that a well educated woman would act so tiresomely

Who was your favorite character and why?

Li Yan - excellent characterisation of someone trying to break out of the straight jacket of bureaucracy, but not really sure whether he wants to!

Which character – as performed by Peter Forbes – was your favourite?

I like all of Peter Forbes reading and his characterisations of all are down well even the tiresome Dr Campbell.

Was The Firemaker worth the listening time?

I'm afraid I haven't finished the book, as I got so irritated with the female lead. But...I may come back to it later and in a different mood!

A counter-terror operation, codenamed Wildlife, is being mounted in Britain's most precious colony, Gibraltar. Its purpose: to capture and abduct a high-value jihadist arms-buyer. Its authors: an ambitious Foreign Office Minister, and a private defence contractor who is also his close friend. So delicate is the operation that even the Minister's Private Secretary, Toby Bell, is not cleared for it.

Would you listen to A Delicate Truth again? Why?

Absolutely, I just loved the plot & John Le Carre's reading & characterisation made the listening all the more memorable.

What was one of the most memorable moments of A Delicate Truth?

The ending! I won't say anymore as I don't want to spoil it for those who haven't listened! I just loved it all though.

What does John le Carré bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Mr le Carre should read all his own books, in fact he should read others too for us. I found his characterisation of all the "players" in the story wonderful. I had the feeling that he was "speaking" his characters just as he had heard them in his fertile writer's mind as he wrote the book.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

ABSOLUTELY, except I had work & sleep, drat it!

Any additional comments?

Wonderful classic le Carre, scarily real to our life & times. If you thought all the political thriller plot lines had disappeared with the fall of the Iron Curtain, then think again. The premise of this book is frightening, are we really going back to the 16th century Star Chamber in the 21st?

He was dragged from the sea, his body riddled with bullets. There are a few clues: a frame of microfilm surgically implanted beneath the skin of his hip; evidence that plastic surgery has altered his face; strange things he says in his delirium, which could be code words. And a number on the film negative that leads to a bank account in Zurich, four million dollars, and a name for the amnesiac: Jason Bourne. Now he is running for his life.

Poor Narration

Could have been good, should have been good, but the narrator let it down. I wish I had listened to a sample first, because the books are very exciting, but I just couldn't get past the narrator. Downwards inflections at end of sentences, vain attempts at characterisations that distracted & muddled me. I'm sorry Scott Brick, but I will avoid any book you narrate from now on.
