Yorkshire born and bred, with family tombs in the Minster, I was deeply disappointed by this book. Boring, otiose, repetitious assumes a knowledge of the previous book which, happily, I do not have. I do not like to return books but I would like to in this case.

I urge anyone starting this book, for the sake of their own sanity, to take notes as you will soon be lost in an impenetrable Scandi gloom which goes on and on and on. I lost track very early but stuck with it, never again.

Far, far, far too long (and boring).

A not very interesting story re-family history and amateur drama. Far too long and far too boring. I would return it but I did listen to it all.

I only listened to the dedication which was sufficient to convince me that the choice of narrator was quite wrong. NOT HER FAULT! The book is about an upper-class English male and should be narrated in that voice. When I read the book years ago I really enjoyed it but just the dedication was enough to put me off this version.

A very tortuous long drawn-out mystery, the mystery is how it ever got published. It was however read by a very good reader otherwise I should have ditched it after the first chapter. Boring, long-drawn out, entirely predictable. Sorry to spoil it for anyone but the hero isn't the villain! Had it not been for the wonderful reader I should have ditched it after the first (of many) chapters!

Good readers but a poor collection of stories. I should think the most boring stories written by the respective and usually respected authors. Cruelty to the readers (very good but at least they get paid!) and especially to the groaningly bored listeners.

I listen to mysteries to relax, a plot to unravel and nothing to be taken seriously. I have an inherently frivolous nature.
The description of female mutilation in this book, worthy though the author's intention may have been, completely put me off. No more Rendell for me, thanks!

My heart goes out to the poor chap who had to read this trash. A pub performer dies, mysterious bystander takes up with a complete stranger and they investigate the accident. Occasionally bumping into the police. Utter unbelievable tosh.

Quite good stories and an excellent reader but the sound level was too low. After starting to listen I borrowed a loudspeaker gismo and was just able to hear it.
