Great insight into Wham’s formation

While I’m glad this memoir was voiced by the writer, he doesn’t have the most expressive delivery. I enjoyed this book, but Ridgeley offers himself up as the martyr whose sacrifices and compromises created the George Michael we loved and adored. Ridgeley goes out of his way to assure the world he didn’t aspire for anything more than what Wham delivered. It often felt as if he was reassuring himself. It’s a fitting tribute to his friend though and an enjoyable insight into the friendship that formed Wham.

Fantastic book that needs a better title

I imagined this as some light chick lit from the cover and title, but it’s just so much more. It took me a little while to get into it, but I often find that with audio books. However, the story soon sucks you in and it’s surprising, wonderful and very satisfying. I was truly sad to finish this book.

I was hooked by the premise and not let down. You think you’re going to work out what happens but the ending is surprising, yet realistic and it’s an enthralling, satisfying read.

It took me some time to get into this story and at times I wondered why I was persevering. But the dialogue between Belinda and Amma is stunning at times - raw, breathtaking and painfully insightful and honest. I mourned the loss of their interactions when they parted and found the story didn’t offer me anything else to keep me captivated. Belinda is a complex character and she’s well written, but at times I felt as lost as she was with the story. I’m glad I persevered but I didn’t find this a satisfying read. Having said that - I feel the interactions of Belinda and Ama will remain with me for a long time to come.

There was a lot of hype about this book. I’d never read anything by Julian Barnes, but thought I’d try it and I wish I hadn’t. I persevered through all 7+ hours as I hope that something mind blowing would happen, but it didn’t. There was nothing in this book to make you care about any of the characters and so it was difficult to care about the story, which was slow moving, rambling and limped to the finish line. The narrator did nothing to help create any empathy or warmth for the protagonist, but he can’t so much with such a limp story so I gave him 2 stars. I listen to 30+ audio books a year and this is the first I wish I hadn’t wasted my time on. Do yourself a favour, find another book to listen to!

I loved this. It always takes me a little while to get into a new audio book and concentrate on what is going, but then I was hooked by this! Great writing, great performance and an intriguing and well researched plot. It left a void when it was over and I’ve been missing the characters. A great adult novel by Meyer!

Any additional comments?

This is a great story that I have read before but wanted to revisit on long car journeys. Well read and very captivating, but it is let down by the addition of inappropriate and unnecessary oriental music. At one point the climax is delayed by almost a minute of weird music and then a silence. Please get rid of this - it detracts from the listening experience.
